Not really.
In Linguistics it's well known that the two languages (Korean and Finnish) share certain grammatical structures with the Hungarians and a couple of small Ural Mountain cultures, and to a lesser extent with Turkish (the Turks came down from the North originally; the Finns and Hungarians from the East and the Koreans from the West). |
Korean studies means Korean language or culture, politics, history and so on? I thought it was the latter. |

Adoptee? Moi? Not that I know of! Well, there's one thing, though. During an exchange year at the infamous SNU two professors told me that I must have been Korean in my past life. Unfortunately(?) this is my closest claim of being Korean.  Oh, and in case you are wondering, I don't do taekwondo either.
Why did I pick Korean Studies? I'm not really sure about that. It just happened. I entered the university as a student of Japanology, but later defected from Japanology to Koreanology. Almost all of my friends studied Japanese and Chinese Studies, so I guess I wanted to special. Anyway, almost none of them found a job that has to do with Japan or China either, so in the end the result would be the same.
At my uni [insert country] studies include language, culture, history and the works. Everything. A person with persuasion for "real" linguistics go somewhere else. |

There are cheaper alternatives to the US for reading for a degree. In the OP's case, there are several good art schools in Europe which would be cheaper.
If getting a high paid job is the be all and end all of getting a degree then you have to network (and get as much work experience as possible). A degree doesn't equal a good job (regardless of the subject you read) - anyone thinking otherwise will be in for a deep shock at the end of their university education. |
This is true. Had I known that even with international tuition rates, going to school abroad would cost about the same or less than in-state tuition in the US, I would have gotten my useless degree elsewhere. |

I have a Digitech Valve Effects unit which I paid 500 GBP for in 1993.....I slaved for 6 months washing dishes to pay for that.
I used it until about 1995 since when it has sat in a closet in my Mum's house never touched.
Comparing my income then to my income now that would be like me going out and spending 3,000,000 won now on something that makes my guitar sound wobbly. |

*sigh* I certainly didn't want to annoy anyone. All I'm saying, is that at least you guys can find an employment in Korea, while I, the Finnish schmuck who majored in Korean Studies and really want to live and work in Korea, can't. I don't know how many of you guys really want to live and work in Korea, but I do! It's just almost impossible without marrying a Korean.
I've contacted quite a few K-institutions and gov't bodies only to hear, "If you were a native speaker of English and/or had a permanent residency visa, then... Blah blah blah."
Anyway, this will be my last post on this thread. Thank you! |

Why not contact Finnish industries in Korea: http://www.fibox.co.kr/ . No idea if they are hiring but I had a tour at their factory and it seemed like a nice place. There are probably other Finnish companies here too you should try to contact.
I hope I can start working for a western company in Korea after I finish my studies, so I wonder how hard it is to get hired. |
