I am thinking about taking a positon on Geoje Island and would like to find out more about the island. I'm not sure which city it's in. I guess that would be helpful. Anyway, I am over 30 and not much interested in getting drunk every weekend. I am more interested in sight seeing, taking language classes, finding a gym or other activities, and maybe finding a meet up group on the island. I am not opposed to having a drink every now and then and will probably end up going out to meet people as I would be the only foreign teacher in the school. Can anyone give me an idea of what life is like on the island?

Geoje Island? Wow, you're in for a treat. Your life will be a never ending
whirlwind of cocktail parties, art galleries, fine wines and manicured
gardens. However, you may not have time for those because of the
squash games, yachting and skeet shooting the locals will have you
doing.

Jeez, I REALLY envy you. Geoje Island? Wow.

how old are you? geoje is a pretty dope place to be. just because it doesn't have tinpan IV doesn't mean it's dismissible.

I think what you mean is that you would need a lot of dope to live there.

It doesn't take a Ph.D. to know that Geoje Island will have:

Live entertainment: zero
People to have conversations with: zero
Interesting food: zero
Good foreigner social life: zero
Clubs: zero
Organizations: zero
Within travelling distance to civilization: zero
Globalized, accepting population: zero

if only you knew what you were talking about. it has one of the higher concentration of foreigners outside of the major cities, due to two huge ship-building companies. foreign goods abound! foreigner bars abound! in fact, everything on your list is exactly the opposite of reality. check the link.

Horses for courses mate

Lot's of people aren't interested in live entertainment, clubs, (buy interesting food I guess you mean non korean?) organisations or foreigner life.

I have never been there so I'm not going to comment on what's it like.

Aldershot is 100% correct. I've been to Goeje many times (on vacation). Depending on your age and priorities, Goeje could be a fantastic place. The beaches are the best I've found in Korea. You would need a car or a motorcycle to enjoy Goeje. You're not far from Busan, either.

Aldershot provided a great link.

Ever been there mate?

Only spent a boozy week there so I'm sure VI will chip in with a better perspective (even though this was discussed very recently), one of the main cities in Okpo has several great restaurants, people don't stare at all as there are so many Westerners, Busan is a short ferry ride away, nice beaches, a cool place to be in the summer.

Hey OP. I honestly think trinidad has no idea what he's talking about. I lived on Geoje for about 18months and i really enjoyed it. I was in Gohyeon. Like another poster said the island has a large concentration of foreigners due to the ship yards, and also a large number of esl teachers.

yep the island is obvously quieter than seoul or the larger cities. Gohyeon has a number of good bars and a few nite clubs. Theres a vips and a number of other western based restaurants, a fab vietnamese restaurant, along with a wide range of korean restaurants. theres a very popular doctor who deals mainly with foreigners, but most of the other doctors or specialists also speak very good english. there are two cinemas and a large department store, with a homeplus. Alot of the people working in banks, pharmacys and stores also speak alot of english so its very easy to to day to day dealings.

Okpo is the other city on the island (about 15 mins drive away) has a much wider range of restaurants and bars aimed at westerners. It has a theatre that can attract some big names, an art gallery (they also offer lessons) and a foreigner supermarket. Teres a foreign residents club called the GFRA has meet regularly and organise activities and also theres a group on facebook The Geoje Teachers group that also organise nights out for dinner and drinks.

The south of the island has some lovely beaches and great sightseeing. Overall its a very good place to be in my opinion. Its about 45mins from Busan on ferry and about 4hours from seoul on bus.

Hope that helped.

the "search" command at the top of the page works perfectly fine if you type in the word "geoje" (just that word "geoje") and it will take you to a dozen or more great threads about Geoje. i've written tons over the years here. take an hour or two and use the search command. the search command may not be good for common words but a single unique word like "geoje" it works just fine.

When did this all change about Goeje-do? Homeplus? wtf??

I went there in 2001 for a holiday (ha!!) and found it full of hicks, trash and my very own ajosshi stalker. Maybe I just picked an extra special shitty spot to go.

gohyeon downtown used to be like wando in jeollanamdo - times have changed.... the community of okpo, where i lived, doubled in height, while i lived there (i used to have a 360 panorama from my place to the sea and mountains but when i moved out the sea was blocked by buildings and 3/4s of the panoramic vista was buildings blocking the hills from sight)

i lived there from late 2002 until spring of 2006 and the changes were phenomenal, staggering, with construction and development at a pace that only koreans and the UAE seem capable of; the bridge to Busan might have stimulated it, that bridge/tunnel project is over half done

Hahaha. No seriously. You pretty much have to be forced to live in a
place like that, right?

It is like if the judge gave you a choice of: 6 months in the slammer
or a year on Geoje. I would say probably 60% of respondents would
take Geoje.

Haha, no seriously.

I'm indifferent to this one.

People to have conversations with: zero
So I will be the only one on the island? I'll be sure to bring a volleyball.

Interesting food: zero
I'm not sure what you mean by "interesting." I enjoy a lot of different foods, including Korean, and from what I have read there are plenty of those to pick from as well as some Western restaurants, at least one Indian restaurant, and a Vietnamese place.

Good foreigner social life: zero
Sounds like that depends on your definition of "good." I have no interest in being within staggering distance of 10 bars frequented by foreigners, if that's what you're getting at.

Clubs: zero
I found two and I wasn't even trying.

Organizations: zero
Ditto

Within travelling distance to civilization: zero
Sounds like I would be easily able to travel around the island, catch the ferry into Busan, and take the KTX all the way to Seoul if I wanted to.

Globalized, accepting population:zero
I don't think I need to point out the irony.

Trinidad, maybe you were trying to be helpful, but it doesn't sound to me like you have even been to the island, and if you have, you weren't paying attention. From your response, it is hard for me to understand why you travel at all. You don't seem to enjoy exploring another country or culture.
