I'm just wondering if anyone's run into trouble coming into Korea with mp3s, movies and teaching recources--innocent stuff other than it's being downloaded--on their hard drives. I'm under the impression the Korean law/border patrol doesn't really care about copyright on any Western content, but would it be more wise for me to delete it all and re-download it once I'm there?--Or would that be a pointless effort?

Unless you have something horrible like kiddie porn, do not worry.

If you do have kiddy porn, then the rest of the world should be worried!

Anyway, never been checked. Download away!

I brought my laptop and 2 external HD's, nothing got searched. They didn't even seem to raise an eyebrow. A lot of people say crap like this to get noobs and newcomers scared.

Downloading commence.

Has anyone's hard drive been searched? My computers were never searched. I don't think Korea's that totalitarian.

No way. The most they might have you do is take your laptop out and turn it on to prove that it works and is not a bomb or whatever.

But basically Korean customs does nothing, they just take your card (which you should check all "no" on, even if you're lying) and wave you through.

Nice try, but everyone here now knows you are worried about your porn collection.

It's okay, though, because you can just go ahead and get a new Dave's username. That way, once you do, you won't be known as the poster who was worried about a Korean guy at the airport finding his computer porn.

It is funny the last guy I remember coming on Dave's and asking about bringing in porn through customs was none other than Christopher Paul Neil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Paul_Neil I believe he said something along the lines of "I had a couple of dirty magazines in my bag and was worried about being caught with them"

I was going to say wasn't the last guy to ask that the same guy who got caught in thailand.

I've never heard of porn been a problem in Korea. On my first trip there in 2000 I remember reading the customs declaration form while on the plane. I was SO nervous for the remaining hours on the plane because I happened to have a couple Penthouse magazines in my bag. I ended up tossing them in the bin at the airport washroom, only to find out that no one would have found them anyway.

In terms of computers, if you're worried about any "content" there are several ways to encrypt your drive. A friend has highly recommended Truecrypt, which you can download.

If you want to get rid of old files so no one will see, then simply deleting them will not work. You'll have to get a program like Jetico's BC Wipe and "delete with wiping".

This is the quote I was looking for.

People still keep porn on their computers? What, are we worried the internet might run out? I heard it's been slowing to a trickle... It's more the full seasons of Arrested Development (etc.) and my carefully managed music collection I'd rather not have to re-download or get turned away for having. I'm a paranoid guy at border crossings and in airports for pretty mundane reasons. Thanks for the responses; very stellar. Will keep my wares. Never-nude parties at our place in January.

Sounds great! I'm assuming that's BYOC (bring your own cutoffs)?
