Quote:
A college student is in hot water as her televised statement that "short men are losers" is spreading all over the internet community and has even triggered a lawsuit.

Lee Do-kyung, a Hongik University student, appeared on a popular KBS TV show "Misuda," or "Chatting with Beauties" on Monday and said, "I don't like short men. Height is competitiveness these days, and I think short men are losers. Men should at least be 180 cm tall."

Hurt and angry, Korean internet users began to criticize her online immediately, and decided to take another step: "googling" her.

Before noon the next day, all her personal information including her homepage address, graduation photos, and her frequently used internet ID were posted on numerous websites.

Quote:
a man in his 30s filed a complaint with the Press Arbitration Commission against KBS and is asking for 10 million won in compensation for "mental distress" caused from the "loser" statement. The man is reportedly 162 centimeters tall.

This is basically the only thing all the Koreans in my life were talking about yesterday. That poor stupid girl is a student at Hongdae, and rumor has it she hasn't been to class since the incident. I wouldn't be surprised if she killed herself. She's now known as 루저녀 "loser girl."

Discrimination is like piles, many people have it, but for god's sake, don't show it off.

It reminds me of the dog-poop girl from years ago, who eventually dropped out of university.

Here I feel a little schadenfreude, as these girls say a lot of mean things. No one thought it a problem when they called foreign men in Korea LBH ('losers back home'). Now that they've said something that offended the Korean men who hired them to wag their tails and say cute things, it's getting quite entertaining.

Nevertheless, as for the show: great ratings!

Something about height gets men really riled up.

Most women really aren't so bothered by being short.

There is some sort of instinctual perception that taller men are more attractive. The saying usually goes "tall, dark and handsome" it's our natural instinct to prefer taller men. Much like our natural instinct tells us to prefer more handsome or beautiful women.

Using the term loser is misguided. But I don't see why people are soooo bothered by it. I mean, it's a bubbly head university girl who probably has shoes on her top 10 priority list of what she's thinking of... maybe handbags who knows. (I joke ladies, you can send all hateful PM's to my real username... asmith)

If you read the article, I think she states that she was just reading the script. so she shouldn't be in any trouble, it's all the writer's fault.

Sad part of this whole thing is that everything those gals say have been scripted and rehearsed before taping by the producer.

I heard the dog poop girl actually killed herself because of all the harassment, and now that's the reason why you have to enter your Korean citizen ID number to register for every website, so that the "netizens" can't go around slandering people anonymously at will. Fat lot of good that did.

Short man complex is nothing new, but Jesus lady, Korean men have got enough chips on their shoulder already, no reason to throw salt on the wound! What percent of Korean men are over 180 cm anyway?

I did think it was funny that someone drew a line at 180cm on the wall at the entrance to Hongik Univ. and wrote "below this line = loser" Laughing

Actually, this talk show has long been against by many Koreans in that foreigners talk shit about Koreans...which defaced Korea.

There is a website for boycotting Misuda.

Big whoop. I've heard many a Korean man (and some women) talk about some mystical height limit where women suddenly become unattractive (usually nearing their own height I'm sure).

Anyone who visits the DMZ gets to experience the Korean obsession with height first hand. The tallest flagpole in the world, extensions put on top of buildings to make them taller than buildings across the border, stories of soldiers sneaking into the buildings and sawing chair legs off to make the other country's diplomats seem shorter, size regulations on absolutely every piece of furniture and decoration in the meeting rooms...

Who cares if it was scripted? She willingly chose to read it on public television. Perhaps the individuals who are angry at her should also be angry at the writers, but she certainly shouldn't be exempted, and I've no idea how they could find out exactly who wrote it anyway.

Going on TV and saying things like this has consequences. I certainly hope she doesn't kill herself over it, but if she's going to verbally scorn others over a nation-wide medium -- regardless of who wrote the words for her -- it's hardly surprising if she receives scorn in return.

i've heard that the netizens have been hacking into her online accounts and posting lots of information. apparently, she wrote to the university about how she needed scholarship money because she's poor, yet the netizens found some credit card information saying she went shopping at some high-end clothing shop (my co-teacher mentioned gucci).

What a bunch of pathetic loser netizens.

And they're probably all short.

Go buy some lifts for your shoes and deal with it. In the meantime, quit smoking your life away in the PC Bang and get out of your parents house.
