Hey,
I'm thinking about doing a couple months volunteering in Dharmasala after my contract is up. Just wondering if any of you world travelers had any thoughts on the place. All comments are welcome. |

I was there for a few days only. It seemed kind of crowded and hectic for a village stuck on the side of the mountain. It was like taking Paharganj right out of New Delhi and sticking it on the side of a mountain.
There was a next village over that seemed much more quiet and relaxed.
My first reaction to your comment would be to wonder why someplace with such a huge tourist population would need volunteers. That's just a first reaction, I know there is are so many Tibetans there who need support. And there must be quieter areas around Dharmasala where real work with the Tibetans can be done. |

I honestly don't know much about the place. I just came across a website looking for volunteers to teach English and thought it sounded cool.

Why would anyone want to volunteer when there is real money to be made? |

I spent about a month in Dharamsala (Mcleod Ganj) recently and I enjoyed it there a lot. The scenery around the town is beautiful. There are lots of volunteer opportunities there teaching English. If you don't like all the noise and honking horns in Mcleod Ganj, you can hike up the trail about 20 minutes to stay at a smaller quieter place. |

I spent 8 months teaching English in Dharamsala. Couldn't recommend it more highly. Might be able to sort you out with a placement in a very cool (and worthwhile place). Email me. [email protected]
Relieved to see nobody has bothered to answer the "why volunteer" question. |
