This is a regular and particularly ugly habit of the Korean internet. Every now and then some poor person must be targeted as a national hate-figure.
I think it ties in with the 'wangtta' phenomenon. Everybody wants to join in the hate frenzy just to be sure it's not them who is outside the group.
A young Korean women makes a brainless comment which shows she judges people on their looks.........and? So? What's new?
This is more a symptom of the general trend in Korea where only the beautiful are made a fuss of......
......the first Korean woman in space last year? Did you see her on TV much? I didn't. I had to go to the internet to even see a picture of her. Why?....well, let's just say she's no oil painting.......shame on her for not being beautiful. |

I found that whole astronaut thing uncomfortably revealing about gender politics in Korean society.
Apparently she was very popular with everyone in the astronaut training except the Koreans. Her intelligence, drive and outspoken opinions endeared her to the other nationalities but were anathema to the locals.
Compounding her terrible sin of not being beautiful she also dared to criticise Korea for some of the many barriers placed in the way of women. Something that every Korean knows to be true but apparently it was unacceptable for a mere woman to comment on publicly.
Add to that, that she dared to do far better than her male counterpart, who although being well connected to the Korean oldboy network and thus being the first choice of the Korean space agency, was actually such an incompetent clown that the Russians booted him off the training course for repeated violations of protocol and after repeated warnings.
She inadvertently embarassed the male powers that be, so the poor girl is doomed to obscurity and struggled to find employment while the incompetent male was rewarded with a good government job which he was offered immediately after the tool had finished getting himself expelled from the Russian training program. |

I haven't heard a thing about her since her trip to space. She basically filled the role of Korean woman well, though. From a KT article last spring:
Quote: |
While in Space, Yi will conduct 18 experiments for scientific and educational purposes. TV and radio interviews and other promotional events are also an important part of her mission.
On Saturday night, she promoted Korean food to fellow crew members from Russia and the United States.
``Instant noodle, kimchi and gochujang (red pepper paste) were particularly popular,'' she said. ``I'm not sure whether Korean food will be staple food in space, but it did have a good reception here.'' |
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2008/04/123_22394.html
I guess people didn't take her seriously, either.

However, not every Korean is as serious as Lee and Yi about Korea's space dream.
During Sunday's brief transmission to Seoul, a reporter from Yonhap news agency baffled Yi by asking her to name a TV star who she wants to travel the space with. ``None. But I wish I could have a buddy who can do experiments with me,'' she answered.
The reporter from Korea's dominant news agency then asked Yi to sing ``Fly to the moon,'' a jazz classic, which Yi reluctantly did.
Fortunately for the astronaut, the verbal torture ended as transmission went off right after the reporter's final question: ``How will you respond when an ET appears outside your window?'' |

This was, I think, intended to be inflammatory. 180 centimeters is 5 feet, eleven inches. How many Korean men are 6 feet tall? North Americans are known for being very tall (for the same reason we are known for being very fat -- very rich diets) and the average height is somewhere around 5'9" or 5'10". Most men I know are 5'10" or less.
So this is illogical. This was intended to drive ratings and ratings alone, and I sympathize with the woman who spoke those words, for there is no logical, reasonable cause for her to believe this. |
Younger Koreans seem to be much taller than their parents. I regularly see plenty of guys on the subway or street that are more than 5'11. |
I see plenty of taller Korean guys too. The modern generation eats much better than their grandparents did, and it shows in their height. |

Only if your parents are rich and of course you are a member of the master race
I also remember the flurry of newspaper reports attempting to justify his bullheaded refusal to follow the training regime and trying to paint his dismissal as somehow unfair. Contrast that with the almost total silence about the woman's success and it left me wondering just who his daddy was |

She said a stupid thing that may or may not have been scripted and now the netizens are practically trying to lynch her. God, I hate them. There's a pretty high chance that she could kill herself over this but they won't stop their self-righteous crusade. You can bet if a male Korean had made some derogatory comment about some aspect of females' physical characteristics there wouldn't have been half the fuss. |

Um.
I realize this is off topic (significantly), but (and forgive me if I've mistaken you for someone else) but weren't you the one who posted all that junk about how your girlfriend dumped you for no reason or something?
I hope these two weren't the same girlfriend. Otherwise, I think you might have some critical thinking issues. |
LOL! |

Women have a staunch preference for tall men. She expressed this universal truth rather rudely. Maybe, like me, she's met many short men with chips on their shoulders due in no small part to their height (and who are, in consequence, distinctly unpleasant)
If I were to develop my point, I might say that this is one reason why Western man/Asian female couples are very common mixed-race marriages.
If you're a shorty, sorry to hear that. Even sorrier if you're bald too. |

You know how I know you're racist?
As several people pointed out in the thread already, young asians are much taller than grandparents and even parents, likely due to improved diet and healthcare. In fact riding the subway in Korea and one in Canada I don't see a big difference at all in the 30 something and under crowd in either country. |

If citing the simple, mere fact that caucasian men are on average taller than Asian men is racist, then I shudder to think what kind of schooling you must've received. |

Koreans insist on this as well, and I always argue with them about it.
The thing is, it's not that (on average) young Koreans are shorter than, say, young Americans -- it's that Korean height is generally more uniform than American height. In the US you see massive people and you see tiny people. In Korea, most men are around the same height, so if someone's really tall, they stand out more.
I will say this -- I'm about 5 foot 8. I work at an all boys middle school. My little cousin back home is 15. When I go home, I am taller than most of my cousin's friends still, but most of my third grade students are as tall or taller than I am. And my second graders are shooting up like beanpoles. I only see them every two weeks and I swear some of them grow six inches in between. |

The difference in the younger generation is negligible. The much older generation it is very significant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#Average_height_around_the_world
Canadian Men: 174.0 cm (5' 8.5") 2005
American Men: 176.3 cm (5' 9.4") 2007
UK: 177.2 cm (5' 9.7") 2007
South Korea: 174.5 cm (5' 8.7") 2005
Japan: 171.5 cm (5' 7.5") 2006
China: 170.2 cm (5' 7.0")
The average man in Korea, China and Japan is about 5 inches taller than the average woman.
The biggest gap is between british guys and chinese guys a whopping 2.7" on average. However they're only 1" on average taller than young Korean guys. Asians are not the midgets their grandparents were.
You can see the obvious effect diet and health care play as the average height of a North Korean man is: 165.6 cm (5' 5.2") 2005
