I was asking questions concerning a dialogue where someone's dog got loose and destroyed another person's flower garden. I asked "What should Sujin do about his dog?" the answer I was looking for was, "keep him inside."
one of the students answered "eeh shourd eeet heez dogu!"
Not believing what I just heard, I asked "Beat his dog?"
and she said no, "Eeet heez Dogu" and then she made eating motions.
I, a naive first time ESL teacher new to Korea, did not realize that they actually still did that here. I thought it was just a western stereotype that the Yokels back home Joked about and was not still practiced except maybe in North Korea. When I asked the class how many had eaten dog, it was about half the class.
Now whenever I walk by the pet store window in my small town, I wonder if those little puppies that seem to be replaced almost daily, are going to be pets or dinner? |
You are a newb. Koreans still eat dogs, but only one breed of dog. It is raised for eating only. The pets in the shops are pets. It is 99% likely the girl was actually making a funny joke. |

One student I had speaks excellent English, and he was reading a young adult novel with the word "portcullis."
For his homework, I gave him 10 difficult words from the chapter he was reading and had him write sentences using these words.
"portcullis: I *&#% in seonsengnimble's girlfriend's mouth under the portcullis." |

| Slightly off-topic, from a pencil case I saw today: "Experience is a comb given to a man after he has gone bald." only with worse grammar that I can't remember. |

At my girl's High School the students were writing 1 minute speeches about any topic. A girl showed me hers and asked me to edit it for her on Tuesday. It wasn't as funny as it was just weird and disturbing:
"This is American society. The Pilgrims and the black slaves came to America and started the roots of America together."
"Bananas view Asian culture as inherently inferior; whites and Asians disdain bananas for such parochial attitude."
"I lived in British Columbia in Canada. It was considered as a "beautiful" place to live because there were two blacks in the entire school."
WHAT?!?!? |

I had students choose two characters from a list and describe them.
For Superman. "He wears triangle panties."
Poor Superman. |

I had kids who were required to keep a diary and make entries twice a week or so. One kid who could barely speak English beyond hello made a fine entry once about his visit to a museum. I forget the exact words, but part of it went like this:
"and the painting was sublime in its depiction, its radius about the same size as a circle.."
hmm, that was odd. |

years and years ago I had a group of grade one students make up a survery. They had to fill in which animals they liked. The classroom had some posters of different animals. The one poster had rooster on it labeled as a cock. So a girl student wrote that down on the paper and started asking all the other kids if they like cock.
"Tommy, do you like cock?"
"yes, I Like cock."
"I like cock, too."
Last year sometime a grade five girl wrote in her diary that she played with herself on the weekend. I told her that she should write by herself. She insisted on using with. I told her to please trust me and use by and that i didn't want to explain why. But she kept insisting the she played with herself. I gave up. |

I asked my students whats they would do if their parents left them home alone for the weekend. One boy said he would bring over every boy in his class and sleep with them.
Write a sentence using the word Gentle.
Usually my father is gentle, but when he drinks soju he is not. |
