it makes me cringe when foreigners are over polite to service people. you know the type. specifically, when they press their hands together in a prayer motion and bow, buddhist monk style, when a waiter or shop assistant gives them their change, or brings their food etc. why do people do this?
thanks for reading. |

When a couple of my friends has just arrived, after a month in Thailand, they had trouble not doing that anymore.
In Korea, it's only done for monks. So the reactions from random people they would ask for directions were pretty classic. |

You think that's bad, when I visited Paris after my first four months in Korea, I accidentally did a little bow to an airport worker who showed me to a cab. |

Yeah when I was back in England for a while I found myself notbowing but saying hello, please, thank you and goodbye, even have a good day in shops.
Can be unfulfilling a lot of the time when you get no response back. You sometimes get ignored or looked at as though you're strange. In classy places it goes down well though and can make you a popular customer.
It's kind of become a habbiit to me now.
Yeah I can't stand the tree hugging pseudo hippy types. Have been in Korea a year, they bow to atm's and service people but still ask for the prices in dollars and can barely pronounce 'anyeong hasseyo.'
I once walked into Cannif's apt and say him actually hugging some trees he'd bought specifically for that purpose. I was jealous. |

... is it strange to say have a good day to the shopkeeper where you're from?? I just assumed that would be normal.
Added note: I'm from a farming area of Canada. Maybe that's why |

There is a teacher a work with who does the same thing. Enunciates every word slowly and clearly. Guess it's because he has a Korean wife!
I was in the States shopping at Wal Mart with my Mom when she ran into someone she knew. She introduced me and I shook his hand....AND BOWED!!!! I felt like a moron... |
