As if Korean electronics/appliances weren't expensive enough already...

Consumers contemplating a new washing machine or television had better make a decision fast. There's less than six months before an additional tax goes into effect next year....

The government said in August that it would impose a 5 percent individual consumption tax on non-energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators, TV sets and washing machines for five years from April 2010.

Only those 4 things?

Yeah, it was poorly written. The photo caption says consumer electronics.

THE FTA's are killing the tax income for the government, so they have to get it from somewhere else.

The way this is written could also just mean that these four items will be taxed if they have low energy efficiency, and not taxed if they are more efficient.

I'm guessing this is for electronics that do not meet the "EnergyStar" compliance.

just an update on this thread.

i was in a shop the other day with my wife looking at lcd tv's and the sales assistant brought this up. effectively saying this 5% tax is across the board regardless of efficiency...its a 5% tax on carbon producing home appliances. he said i should be looking at buying b4 march as that is when all electricronic goods will have the nex tax applied. anyone else hear this?

this is pretty ridiculous! more tax on already expensive electronics? my samsung tv costs 50% less in Canada...i read an article somewhere that said koreans pay more for their electronics so that the companies can give better prices to international distributors...

so koreans are essentially subsidizing their domestic products for the world market..lol they are taking one for the team and they dont seem to mind. im not sure if thats patriotism or stupidity...either way, thanks Korea for making my Tigerdirect purchases cheaper Smile
