why oh why don't they turn on the heat for us?
it's kinda unbearable!

It is because winter has not started yet. Winter starts on the same day every year in Korea because Korea has four seasons. Having said that its like a sauna in this office today. The heaters are not just on, they are on H.

At my school, the lead accountant came into the English room/my office and told my co-teacher that the heaters shouldn't be used at all this year. He conveyed this to my co-teacher with a lot of teeth-sucking thrown in. Figured it'd be something bad.

Just remember that Korea is a land of extremes: things are either off OR on, to the maximum (heat or cold room/bus temperarture, volume, spiciness, drunkenness, etc.). There is no in between here. Besides, thermostatic controls are still relatively new here, and they don't have the hang of them yet! There is very little thinking outside the box, creativity, etc. Just keep it in the proper perspective..............

Heat's on in the offices and classrooms, but it is buggering cold in the hallways. No wonder everyone has a cold, going in and out all the time.

Also, if I catch one more little tramp opening all the windows in my classroom because they just came in from playing soccer and "Teacha HOT!", I will throw them out of it.

ALL the teachers at our school went and bought thermal wear the day after our school demonstrated that the heaters will only be used minimally. (unless of course the students and parents start complaining)

We're bundled up in so many layers that if the school actually turns up the heat to a reasonable level, we're all screwed

I must admit that the broiling classroom/office and freezing everywhere policy of my school has me a bit confused. Why all the doors and windows are open while the heat is on also boggles my mind.

What gives?

I truly feel sorry for the girls - those stupid uniform skirts cannot possibly be keeping them warm enough.

the cold corridors are the only thing that saves my energy and sanity away from the boiler room the teachers office has become.

and a lot of the Korean female teachers wear a coat or sweater on for good measure.

I have to get down to my T-shirt.

Yup,
all or nothing. Once the heat is turned on it will be hot enough to fry an egg on your desk. Until then its an icebox. Same in the summer - once the A/C has been turned on can't go shopping without wearing a sweater.

Korean schools are run by middle-aged men who reckon school should be just like it was when they were students.

My boss thinks we are pampered because there's hot water and toilet paper in the one bathroom that has been designated for teachers use.........of course it's turned off from March to November!!



Oh yeah.....Koreans and their disdain of the thermostat.....that really starts to irk.....it's so hot! Now it's so cold! Now it's so hot!! oh, cold again....set the frickin thing on medium and leave it alone!!

Yup... they haven't figured out there's a setting, except for 'FULL BLAST' on anything ... just as they're too stupid to look where they're going!

My office is comfortable, and my classroom is (I control the thermostat) but the hallways are deadly. I CONSTANTLY close open windows. "Teacher... fresh air!"

Children... fresh punch in the face!
