The Korean government made a webpage, ifriendly.kr, to help foreigners register with Korean websites.
http://www.ifriendly.kr/e_main.html
A few problems:
* The English is atrocious.
Quote: |
"Internet guide of identical person acknowledgement on alien in Korea" |
Quote: |
"'Identical person acknowledgement'is
to confirm identical person on the Internet
in order to settle using culture of sound internet" |
* It isn't compatable with anything other than IE.
* To top it all off, they ripped off the IE logo.
Yet another fail, one that trumps even the "Visit Korea Year: 2010-2012." It is it really so hard to consult foreigners when creating things supposed to be for them? Was it really too much to ask a native speaker to spend an hour proofing the stuff before launching it with fanfare?

There are loads of Koreans with outstanding english in the country. Why do none of them ever seem to get jobs writing and editing stuff like this?
At every hogwon I ever worked there were tons of K-women with excellent english skills. People who'd spent time out the country and could talk as fluently as a native speaker...who'd give their right arm for proper jobs in government. But always its the nepotism or male domination ensuring that people who don't have english skills....are given jobs requiring english skills. |

Christ, there are God knows how many NATIVE SPEAKERS in this country. Surely it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to call a western friend and ask if it makes sense. Time and again i see this rubbish. I just don't get it. |

I couldn't even get off of the Korean page, clicking the English tab does nothing. I am on Firefox so I guess that big "e" is suppoised to mean I have to change my browser.
Nice half-azzed attempt Korea. |

I don't understand the purpose of this website. What is it for? Help foreigners register with Korean website? Register for what where?
Anyway, the website kind of worked with Chrome for me as long as I don't zoom in out out. If I zoom the buttons stop working. So the webpage is working for me, I just don't know what it's supposed to do for me. |

When i lived in montreal i would see this shit as well. Something about
half nations with bruised identities always looking for approval and validation with other's languages. |

The Korean govt does a lot of things just for show, to give an impression of being modern and multicultural, accepting and advanced.
this goes from making laws that are never honored, signing international agreements that are never respected, to designing websites claiming to allow foreigners to use Korean websites that do anything but. If a court case involving a foreigner looks like it will make international headlines, they might rule in favor of the foreigner to create a good image: yet with every other minor injustice involving foreigners within the country, they will side with the Korean.
The reality on the ground is that they are no nearer being a tolerant or international country than they were 500 years ago. They pay lip service to the ideals of an advanced nation...without ever following through. |

I think it is easier to figure out the Korean than try to figure out the English on that site. They need to seriously ask for some help. ~.~ |

That's a no-go. Asking for help is an automatic loss of face. |

After looking at it, I figured some government official (possibly Korean) wanted to save a buck and translated all of the Hangul through BabelFish. That's what they (the government) call efficiency! |

I think the government and us have a different idea of what "help" means. This particular website looks like its purpose is to explain the basics of the system to various users and site operators. I don't think this was created to walk anything through sign-up on a site. That's what my blog is for *cough*
For those who don't know the Koren name database and foreigner name database are actually two different databases. to allow sign-up sites have to subscribe to both. I'm not sure, but I think that subscription costs money. Perhaps fees to maintain it. A lot of sites probably don't see the benefit in subscribing to the foreigner one. |

Its still available:
http://www.ifriendly.kr/e_main.html
Just not as a direct link.
I still think you're misinterpreting the purpose of this page. Regardless of good or bad translation I don't think it is any kind of site to facilitate signing up for Korean websites. Its purpose seems to be to provide a brief overview of what the system is and to promote it to site operators. |

For fun, I wrote a page like this with lots of images and text but no content: http://keneckert.com/ken/kenco/index.html
This page reminds me of this. After looking at all the flash and images, some quite well done, I have no idea what the purpose of the page is and have learned nothing about how to apply the information, even what little I understand in the fractured English.
The Korail site in English is good. Doing it right would take so little effort rather than relying on Babelfish. |
