I know there is a 10000 dollar limt per person when returning to the USA, but how does that apply to a family or not? For 4 people in a family does that mean 40k is the limit?

I searched on the Internet and tried to call US customs but still I dont have an answer....

I had a friend who recently went over to look at houses stateside.. both her and her husband had 10k each and they got a slap on the wrist for it. I think they had some misc amount in their wallets as well. Not sure how that all played into it. If you're close to the limit, check all the cash you're carrying.

Make sure you're under, if you don't want to declare. This includes cash, checks, money orders, traveler's checks, coins, bonds, gold bars, any monetary instrument. Basically anything that some convenient store would consider in place of cash.

Maybe call the American embassy? They may be able to give you specific info.

yes, the limit is 10Gs. Why not just transfer the money over? Maybe you couldn't? Shoot, I wouldn't want to get ganked with that much on me!

I left Korea with a lot more. I tried to declare it, but they said it applies only to Koreans.

Whether that is true or not, I've no idea, but that's what she said.

So I just put my wads back in my pocket and continued on my merry way!

There is no limit. You can bring as much money as you want to the U.S. but if bring more than 10,000 you must declare it. I beleive that 10,000 is per family but if you explain that it's your pension plus your bank account from Korea it should be fine.

seconded. You'll be in hot water if you don't declare it.

It was per family coming to Korea. My family had more, then went to open accounts and when we asked about depositing an amount over 10,000 USD, they wanted to know about customs declarations and such. So we kept it under, not wanting the attention. We'd assumed it was for individuals, but not. I believe going to the US is the same, as Korea seems to have copied the standard.

So if you declare it and you're over $10,000 do they tax it?

What about sending it over, do they tax that if it's more than $10,000
