Just a few weeks after signing contracts to teach at a hagwon in Chungju - and about 2 weeks before moving there from Canada - my wife and I have just discovered that we're unexpectedly... pregnant. Oh yeah, and we just quit our jobs and rented out our house for a one-year term.

This was going to be our first time in Korea and, from what we've read on the internet/forums, Korea seems like a pretty good place to give birth and raise kids. Our recruiter is going to speak with the director today to see if she's alright with me continuing to work my one year contract, while Kathryn works the first few months or something. It may sound crazy, but our options aren't great here in Canada either, and we were both greatly looking forward to our time in Korea.

So, to get to the real point of this post: does anyone know what the medical services are like in the city of Chungju? Are there any english-speaking OB/GYNs or doctors at womens' clinics? Any advice would be appreciated!

Are you on facebook? Join the group "Chungjuites-Past, Present, and Future". There's a few of us that have been around for some time. I've lived here for five years, but being a single white male I haven't had much call to look up obgyns.

Konkuk University Hospital (show 건국대학교병원 to a cab driver and you'll get there) is the biggest and nicest hospital. It's recently been renovated and is actually pretty good. There's also a clinic a little ways away with a very good, English speaking female doctor. The best I can describe its location is that it's on the city hall side of the river about three buildings towards Namsan from the decorative bridge next to the big bike shop in the middle of town (not downtown, the middle of the whole city).

Thanks for the tip. Anyone else out there know something or have experience with giving birth or being pregnant in Chungju (or perhaps a similarly small city)?

I'm not sure about Chungju, but I had a baby in Seoul 5 months ago.
Try the expat parents forum, someone there might be able to help.
