My school recently got in some trouble and had to close down temporarily. They want us to sign new, bad contracts, and cancel our old, good contracts. I have a new job offer. When the old school cancels my contract, I'm immediately illegal in Korea. How do I get them to cancel it, and then sign with the new school on a new contract? When a contract is terminated prematurely before your visa ends, do you have a certain number of days to leave the country? I couldn't find any answers to this particular question elsewhere.

If you've been there 9 months, you can transfer to another hagwon. Probably need a release letter from you current hagwon. In your case, though, I don't know if anything has been "cancelled." If the hagwon shut down, you need to go to immigration and clear this up. They'll do one of two things if you are indeed not working for this academy any longer: cancel your alien card and give you a 30-day exit order or allow you (and give you some time, maybe) to transfer your status to another school/academy.

When I get my letter of release, is my visa immediately cancelled? Or do I have a few days to say take the ferry to Japan and come back on a tourist visa?
