Everyone please be aware to not open your bank account in Korea with Hana Bank! They refused to close my account today over 14,000 won or about $12. The reason being is b/c I used my check card two days ago and according to them it has not cleared yet but they refused to give me the balance in my account. I have about $3000 that they will not give to me. Is this even legal???????????????????????????????????????????

Why does SMOE make English teachers get an account with a bank that is not an English speaking friendly and on top of that thieves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God knows I didn't come here to work for free.

Is it a life or death situation that you can't wait until your check card has been debited from your account?

You are closing your account and transferring the money out of the country?

The bank wouldn't let you take out your current balance minus the undebited amount?

Pretty sure that if I have to close an account in the UK then I have to wait for all debited amounts to be accounted for before I can get access to all my money.

Okay but that still does not make sense. I should still have access to the rest of my money. They can keep the 14,000 won and give me the rest. The rest of it is still my money. Thankfully, I am not leaving tomorrow or dying but if I was I would be totally fucked. I should still be able to have access to the rest of my money.

I read this, shook my head, did a "Wow, just wow" and then wondered why common sense isn't so common anymore. Let's see some things that those of us with common sense might have done:

1) Waited till the debit went through, then withdrawal all your money.
2) Take out as much of that $3000 as you can and then go back for the rest after the debit goes through.

I can't believe you graduated from a university and actually call yourself "teacher". Show some maturity and use your higher order thinking to figure out why they wouldn't give you the money and how you could get it back.

Why even close the account? Just take out as much as you can and forget about the few hundred won you have in the account.

here is an idea for you. why have you not opened another account with another bank, then every month when you get paid, go to the atm and transfer your money to a bank you deem for foreigner friendly.

First of all, I did take out the max amount of money I could from an ATM since they refused to give me any money. That was the first thing I did after talking to these people for about 2 hours. Second, it does not take a genius to figure out that the next day I need to withdraw more money if the ATM allows it. I have consulted the embassy and they told me that the bank should have given me the rest of the money. The embassy is going to check into this for me tomorrow.

I guess you are right, Hanabank should keep my $3000 because I used my checkcard for 14,000 won 5 days ago. So I gather you are one of the many trashy English teachers that lives in Korea b/c you can't make it in the real world. You have probably been living here for years. You which type of "teacher" are you?

a) Alcoholic
b) Child molester
c) Asian Fetisher
d) Ugly loser
e) Socially awkward nerd that cant get any back home
f) All the above

First, a debit can take up to 4 days to clear. It deals with when the store settles their credit card machine (In the US gas stations will put a $1 hold and then 3~5 days(weekend involved).... later the full charge will go through).

Did you know exactly how much your debit was for? If you didn't know, they might have been wary. I've seen accounts where people took all the money but the debit out, and then overdrawn their account. (sorry, I used to work in a bank...) . They should have let you withdraw most of your balance though that day and allowed you to turn off your debit card so that no other charges could go through.

Yes, I understand that they may have to wait for the large amount of 14,000 won to clear but they could of given me $2000 dollars. The reason I wanted to close my account in the first place is b/c this bank's service is terrible. I always have issues with them.

I am not going to let them keep a few hundred won. Why should I? I work really hard for that money and put up with a lot of b.s. like a lot of you do here. When you let people do whatever they want with you, they just will keep taking advantage of you.

The reason why I posted this was to try to save others from these troubles. My plan was to close this account and open one with KEB instead. If I am still here, that is what I will do.

Thanks for the positive responses and good luck to you all.

Thanks for proving my point. It looks like you are choices d & e. Your profile picture says it all. If you didn't fit the profile, you wouldn't be offended and had the time to be responding.

OK, OK...that is enough of the childish namecalling. The next time an insult is thrown, I will "close your account" and you can "bank" somewhere else!!

SMOE never told me to bank with hana use kookmin.

Why would you go to the effort of transferring your money every month? when you could just go to the admin ladies and tell them you have changed banks and tell them to pay in to the new account from then on.
