I have recently beefed up my search for a job in K-Land and have gotten very similar responses from recruits I had been in contact with for a while and some that I have just recently began speaking with.

They are both saying that finding a job in Seoul is going to be next to impossible if I am not a female and that the schools have become very picky. They say I should change my location preference or be S.O.L.(pretty much sums up what they are saying)

Is this a common thing right now? I'm seeing tons of Seoul Positions on the job board and just wondering what the current situation is right now.

I'm looking to find a job sometime after January 20th, 2010.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What is this spectrum you speak of? Is that a recruiting agency or another forum?

A quick google didn't really turn anything up.

Thanks

Appearance is very important though many of you will find it extremely offensive to be judged on how pretty and dolled up you look, man or woman.

Maybe you just don't have the gorgeous model looks they are after up in Seoul City, the high society of shiny haute couture past extremes of ridiculousness. Now go doll up in your suit and do your hair to do a new photo shoot before applying again. A man also needs grooming and dolling up to look good; not just for the ladies.

I remember how my hagwon director became nicer to me when I wore the same suit as I wore in my job application picture for a parents open house event. When you got a look they are after, you are then wanted. If you stray away from that look by loosening up to casuals, your ratings and re pore go down. Yes, the Koreans want to see a mousse haired movie star model dude in a shiny pin striped suit; not a casual college/weekend style of lose somewhat long hair and T-shirts with jeans. I tend to wear Polo and Dockers though shiny suits and hair gel would probably set you right up with being more accepted. It kind of goes like this with appearance. In the American Midwest, they would accuse you of being gay and even act hostile towards you if dolled up like you see in print and film, but in Korea, they would see you as a super star teacher and you'd go places with few issues.

Just apply and give it time. That's what schools are asking for, but that's not what they'll all get.

Maybe you simply have too much time. I think it's easier to find the perfect job in 1 month than in 2 or 3. I don't know why that is. I wouldn't worry. You have given yourself SO MUCH time. Just get your docs in order now and the job will come to you.

Have you considered Gyeonggi-do area? There are several decent-sized cities around there and they are all close enough to Seoul for weekend sightseeing, shopping, whatever.

I wouldn't be surprised. I'm in the sticks and there are more foreigners here now than I've seen in the last five years.

Yea as the guy above said, most Koreans want pretty people. Make yourself prettyful. Send your best pictures, make your resume really good even if its not true, and make a good impression on your interview~

+1 Apperance matters (especially so in Korea). This is true whether you want it to be or not

+1 Again. Spend the 50,000 won and go to a QUALITY professional photography studio. Wear a suit or any other clothes you feel comfortable and confident in. The Korean photo studios really do a very thorough job adding photoshop effects and corrections to your photo to get rid of any blemishes, etc. You will have a very professional photo of yourself at the end that can be attached to resumes and emails. Well worth the investment if you ask me. Plus, it can also double as a present for the parents, grandparents

+1 Summed up nicely. Sounds quite typical of my experience as well.

Its also not a good time of year to be looking for available positions.

Many more positions will be available during February for the beginning of the year.
