I was considering creating a poker lesson plan for my high school students. I've heard that gambling might be a bit taboo in Korea, but haven't really got any confirmation on this. My co-teacher already plays a kind of gambling game every once in awhile; students bet points based on their confidence level of answering a random question. Any thoughts on this?

Yeah, teaching gambling is a bit of no-no. You can use the deck of cards as a learning tool. You can't teach them how to play poker.
'tis a pity because there are many great poker scenes in movies that's good for teaching dialogue.

You could ask your co-teacher what they and the school might think - make it clear you are not encouraging playing the game for money.

i too would love to make something like that. i've been toying with using the simpsons characters instead of cards. so you get dealt a simpsons character instead of a card. there's a lot of them. or just use 4 characters as suits and then 12 different pictures as the cards and add a number to the picture. im toying with it, its a work in progress.

i think you should stay away from the straight up gambling, but use games and twist them into something fun.

For example, many people use jeopardy, and i have used other games like family feud and who wants to be a millionaire.

i have also used drinking games like president and the ahole and kings, but turned it into an english game. i have also played spades and uno in after school classes where kids must make a sentence from what we learned in order to play a card.
