|
|
I am applying for university jobs in Seoul right now, and I am wondering how much competition there is for these jobs. It seems like there are more applicants this year, due to the bad economy.
More specifically, how many applicants for a good university position (such as Hongik or Sungkyunkwan University) have a master's degree and more than 2 years teaching experience?
I received a reply from Hanyang University, and apparently they had 25 applicants for 9 positions. But they were still accepting applications. 2 years ago, there were perhaps over a hundred or more applicants for Hongdae and Sungkyunkwan. But this year, Hongdae only accepted applications from those with master's degrees.
Also has anybody received a reply from any of the universities in Seoul that they have recently applied to? |

What makes you think that Hongik doesn't have professors who don't have Masters? I know loads of professors out there (past and present) who don't have advanced degrees. Last year Hongik had between 300-400 applications.
As far as competition goes, it's anybody's guess. That information would be hard to come by unless you personally knew someone on each universities hiring committee. With that said, I think the competition (in Seoul at least) is pretty stiff.
Good luck with your job hunt. |

Read carefully, Dorian. I said they didn't accept applications from anyone this year without a master's degree. That is on their website. I knew they did in the past. This is a change. |

Well, that may be what they "say" on the website, but nevertheless there are loads of lecturers out there that don't have advanced degrees. Besides, most unis ask for an MA TESOL (or a related field)~ however, some of them simply can't fill the position with someone having those credentials... |

A. It is a pity that only masters degree holders can apply. Even though I dont have a masters degree, I do have a bachelors degree with an honour in English Education, the internationally recognized teaching qualification CELTA(Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), and more than 10 years of teaching experience in Japan and Korea. Am I qualified as an applicant?
We are afraid you are not qualified as an applicant. Unless the basic qualifications described in the job announcement are met, other qualifications an applicant has, e.g. certification or teaching experience, are not taken into consideration for our screening.
B. I dont have a masters degree at the moment, but will have it soon around next February. Can I apply for the position?
We are afraid you are not qualified as an applicant. As described in the job announcement, you have to have a masters or higher degree from an accredited four-year university AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION. |

Um, I think you're missing the point that I've been trying to make. I KNOW many professors working at Hongik that DO NOT have advanced degrees. What they say and what they do is completely different. Good gosh haven't you ever applied for a post that you didn't have the EXACT qualifications for? I've read their application website... |

Am I right in saying that Hongik is the no.1 job in Seoul regarding terms and conditions for qualified applicants? I've heard this... |

the no.1 job in Seoul regarding terms and conditions? 3.1 million a month? the number one job in Seoul? 3.1 million a month with no housing? Never mind the holidays if what you say is true it's...

I understand your point Dorian, and it's a valid one in most situations.
Edward, it actually starts at 3.2. |

I called them on this a while back. Yes, they only want MA's. Yes, they have BA's teaching. They said they no longer will hire BA's for their positions, despite having BA's currently.
They're one of the better schools for pay/hours, and they know it. They probably just want to cut down on the applications. |

You must have a Master's Degree to be considered these days. While there are lots of lecturers at Hongik that do not have Master's Degrees, the hiring policy has since changed. Even if a teacher wants to switch campuses, they can't if they don't meet the requirements. A year and a half ago, this was not the case. |

THE COMPETITION IS FIERCE THIS YEAR IN SEOUL!!!
A "friend of mine" is a 30-year-old master's degree holder with 3 years experience and 3 glowing letters of recommendation from his current supervisors. He thought I'd be a shoo-in. But so far, he's only been invited to one interview.
Hongik rejected him too. Strange when you consider he was offered a job there several years ago, when he had absolutely no experience.
The market must be saturated with MA TESOLS.
I don't think you BAs have much of a chance this year in Seoul. But I'd love to hear if any of you are getting interviews and/or job offers. |
