Sometimes I have a tendency to shake my head at friends who spend tons of money drinking good whiskey every weekend, when soju is so cheap and delicious. Last night I got drunk on Johnnie Walker for the first time in several months (first time in months I've been drunk on top shelf liquor)and damn! The buzz was so much better, it went down so smooth, and I felt perfectly energized and refreshed this morning- none of the crappy soju after effects. Now, I have to be really careful so I don't become a whiskey/liquor snob and end up blowing hundreds a month on the stuff. So here is my question - is it possible to enjoy good whiskey from time to time and still be able to appreciate soju? I have long lauded the merits of toad juice, but after last night I don't see how I can go back to being happy with Jinro.

Soju is a purely social drink. How anyone can appreciate it for it's own sake is beyond me. You don't drink soju because it's wonderful, you drink it because it's the cheap drink being passed around.

Yea. Whiskey really is fabulous. You can drink quite a lot and still be functional. Both at the time and the next day. Two bottles of soju ruins me the next day. I don't know how Asmith does it.

Apparently, soju tastes a lot like vodka. So my friend says.

Although I don't drink or do drugs, I would probably prefer herb over whiskey. I've never met a violent stoner.

If you took a bottle of cheap vodka, mixed it 50/50 with water and threw in a tablespoon of sugar... you'd have soju.

I hear this a lot, but it's totally at odds with my experience. I've met plenty of violent stoners, especially when they for whatever reason were unable to indulge in their drug of choice. Both my brother's fall into that category, a number of my brothers' friends as well, and my mother's second marriage was to such a man as well.

Perhaps I've just beaten the odds in a remarkable way, but I doubt it.

The makers of soju would disagree.

For sure. They would never use anything as good as cheap vodka... but rather, the least expensive ethanol they can get.

Maybe one day I will get used to soju, but right now it kills me. I prefer beer or whiskey......but man it's just sooooo cheap!

You've yet to meet a serious stoner anxious for his next high.

I abhor soju.

It's a chemical swill (basically ethanol diluted with water) that companies produce for pennies a bottle. It tastes horrible, and leaves your body devastated the next day.

I understand that people drink it both out of nostalgia for poorer times, but things are that tough anymore, so there's no need to continue drinking toilet bowl cleaner. Soju companies -- like Korean beer companies -- really need to step it up and create a quality product for a growing demographic of customers with more discerning tastes.

Beer companies can't, because they have to keep their beer as cheap as possible in order to compete with Soju at all. Not to mention the corporate favoritism...

Interesting point, I'd never thought of that reason before.

As for the OP's original point, the possibility of going back to the cheap stuff after having the quality stuff, well, the same thing pretty much happened to me even before I came to Korea, but with beer instead of whiskey. Just substitute import or import-esque beer like Sam Adams for the good stuff that generally leaves me hangover-free, and American domestics for the stuff I could not go back to.

However, I kind of like soju, and since I am not much of a whiskey drinker anyway, I probably won't have to face the cost v. quality dilemma.

Soju turns me into a raging maniac...doesn't this happen to anyone else? Whenever I drink Soju I get mean, antisocial, and pick fights for no reason. Nevermind the horrible hangover. Whiskey, on the otherhand, makes me impermeable to the cold, and way too confident.

Both have their demerits, which is why I stick to beer and wine.

There is no comparison between whiskey and soju. I like rye and ginger after hanging out with canadians for so long. No hangover the next day if stick to that and just drink water.
