In order to save a little money, new books for three levels of the book series used in my classes were ordered without the student CDs. The series is not new to the school, so I have my own copies of the CDs.

Needless to say, teaching CD-inclusive material is a lot easier when I can give CD homework (meaning that it's a lot harder, on both sides, when I can't; I've just spent four months not being able to give it). So, this second time I'm teaching the books, I made one copy for each student and handed them out. I can't tell you how much the students seemed to appreciate it, and my Korean co-teacher didn't say anything. The copying program I used (Clone CD, all in English) didn't indicate one thing black nor white about it.

But, to close the barn door after I've let the horse bolt, has anyone else ever done this, and is it not illegal, or at least not exactly illegal, to hand out copied CDs without expecting remuneration?

I mean, it's not like I sat in a theater and recorded 20 seconds of a great movie to show people for free, is it? Or is it? Audio, visual, I get the two mixed up!

On the scale of things done in classrooms here, handing out CD copies is hardly a hanging offense. In fairness, you might contact the publisher and ask about getting CDs to go with the books if your workplace will cover it. They are unlikely to turn down a sale and might even throw them in if your school is a good customer.

I wouldn't be terribly worried about liability, but for now you might consider making selected mp3s of the CDs and posting them on a blog or web space which the students can download from. They would find this more convenient and you would not have to churn out discs. You could enlist one of your more techno-literate students to help if you are not confident with it.

I have done. We normally get the cds tho. However we also get a couple of students with dud cds and I just burn off another, never really thought about
