Is it reasonable to get a raise if you renew your contract for another year at the same institution?

If so, what's reasonable? 50k, 100k, 200k?

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for and get a raise if you are renewing a contract. If they want to you to stay then it's upto them to make it worth your while. You could probably find another job for a higher salary and this is something they should be aware of.

I don't know what you'd expect but if you think 50,000 is reasonable then ask for it. Personally though, I'd ask for at least a 100,000 more a month, which is not unreasonable to expect from a school that wants you to stay on.

If they won't do it that then it's up to you. If the school is good and treats you right then that may be more important than more money.

Explain to them that the price of things increase and to make it worth your while to remain you would like an increase in pay. Let them make an offer. The more they want you to stay then the more power you have to get the increase you want, but be smart about it. Don't request a raise that is too outrageous, unless you really want to move on and just want to see if it can be done.

Cheers and good luck with your contract.

I just signed my third contract with the same school. The second contract I was offered 100k more than the first. Half way through the contract she upped it another 100k cuz I guess she was pleased with me.

For the next year she has offered another 100k. I honestly belive I will get paid for what i'm worth. I'm cool with the raise and would likewise be cool with another in 6 months if she felt the need to give me another one. I do a fair bit of unsolicited extra work and I htink thats its noticed.

If I was only in it for the money, i'd stick to only privates. But I honestly feel invested in my school and money is not the biggest thing out there for me.

so my answer is.. yes. I htink 100k is reasonable.

If you really like the school and really want to stay there, then as little as 50k should suffice. But. If the school isn't the perfect school for you but you still want to stay, then 100k extra a month should be the norm.

What do you think you are worth to them? I mean, you staying there is saving them alot of money and time. No recruiters or advertising fees. No training period. No extra housing costs. No visa costs. It adds up. So. Looking at it that way, they should, theoretically, pay you everything they have saved......

Can't really scoff at an extra 100k but if you think that is 'what you're worth' you are really setting your sights rather low. Good teachers should get a lot more ...

I went from 1.6 my first year to 3.22 in my 3rd year.

it's not about getting a raise, it's how you negotiate your contracts.

and that doesn't even come close to my business income.

What the hell does it matter? I renegotiate my contract by trying to reduce my hours and my salary. More free time to make more real money.
