So I broke the contract after they bought the housing and plane ticket and now they're threatening to sue. They do have a 30 days notice requirement on their contract, which I did not follow, I did leave a letter though. And I had to leave for personal reasons.
So can they really sue me even though I'm back in the United States?
I had an E-2 Visa btw and it was a hagwon |

| Of course they can't sue you if you're back in the US, not over something that small anyway. |

Because I need to get a job first and it would take quite a while to find a job and to save up that much from whatever awful job I get |

How long did you work for them?
If you worked 6 months or more, I'd say don't worry about it.
Tell them to take a hike.

He should look up his pension records. If there are none than he can in good conscience tell them where to go. |

To mitigate damages, they could have purchased a refundable ticket. Then, they would only be out whatever cost it is to get that.
As far as the apartment thing, that's Korea's fault as a WHOLE. Maybe they will wake up and allow people to rent with a normal security deposit of a month. This 5-10 million won crap has got to go.
Don't reply or communicate with them, they need another teacher and will waste their time in dealing with you anyway. I just wonder what you are going to do now in the good ol'USA. |

Considering the fact that he worked for a total of 0 days, why would he have any pension record?

It sounds like he flew to Korea and bailed before he started work. He said he left a letter instead of send an email. So a refundable ticket wouldn't mean much since he used the ticket.
So he should just pay back the cost of the ticket if he did indeed use it. If not, then you're right and the school should have bought a refundable ticket.
As for housing, like others have stated, they can use that for their next teacher, so it shouldn't matter. |

If you just flew there on the school's dime, then decided you didn't want to work there and went home, then you should pay them back for the plane ticket ONLY. Can they sue you from afar? Good luck to them... not going to happen.
I would feel like a bad person if I used their money for a flight, and didn't pay them back.
If you arrived there, found the contract terms severely changed, your apartment was a roach motel, and they were evil, then I probably could live with such a thing. |
