|
|
I'm looking to upgrade!
I'd like to do a MA TESOL at some point, but to start with, as a first step, can anyone recommend TESOL certification that I can do in Korea?
I don't really want to do something that's all online, but I need to keep working too, so weekend, evening courses, or something like that would be better.
Has anyone done anything like that in Korea? If so, how was it? |

If you manage to find out how much either of these cost, could you post an update? I failed to find the full course fees online. |

If your really interested in finding out the cost I recommend that you call (the numbers are on the links) or email (the addresses are also on the link) them directly.
BTW they really encourage non-koreans to take their courses.
Also, the SMU TESOL is designed by Maryland University (or is it the University of Maryland) and the Masters is designed by non-Koreans so it is a proper masters degree.
It's not cheap but I dont want to post how much I have paid or am paying as prices do change. That is why I suggest contacting the university directly. The girls who answer the contact numbers are current students themselves and speak perfect English and can answer any and all your questions.
I can tell you that in the Masters program there are scholarships for all non-Korean students. Your scholarship is based on the grades you achieve. But this is only for 3 semesters. Not your final semester.
It's a proper program and what I understand outshines even what any of the SKY's have to offer. |

What are the hours like for lectures? Can you fit teaching around it? |

Like I said before if you are interested make a call and ask them directly. As each semester changes and also you have different options to suit your schedule. |

A friend of mine just did the first part of the Asian EFL Journal Tesol course in Daegu last weekend. He said that it was well run and pretty informative. I'm actually thinking about doing it myself. Here's the link if you want more information about the course. http://vedec.co.kr/news/index.php The course costs 690,000 won.
Hope this helps. |

I saw the Asian EFL one adverstised on Facebook...in Daegu twice this year and one is coming up in Busan in December.
It seems more suitable for me because I don't have much free time during the week and it seems to be a mix of face-to-face sessions and assignments submitted by email. The feedback on Facebook seems pretty good:

I did the Tesol certificaton program at Hanyang University, which is about a 6 month program - to my recollection. You mentioned wanting to possibly do an MA in Tesol, and if you take the Graduate Track at Hanyang, those courses count towards your MA down the road should you choose you pursue it. Granted, the course accreditation only works for a handful of affiliated schools and programs, but the schools are completely legit universities.
It comes down to what you're looking for. I noticed someone made a suggestion for Sookmyung, which is also really good I hear. The usual distinction made between the two, and anyone can feel free to correct me, is that the Hanyang program is a bit more on the academic/theoretical side, whereas the Sookmyung program is more hands on and practical. In fact, some of my classmates in the Hanyang program complained that they chose the wrong program, and that the Sookmyung program was more in line with what they were after.
In any case, the Hanyang Tesol program isn't a "Hanyang" program per se. It's actually run by the University of Oregon. For more information, here's the website: http://tesol.hanyang.ac.kr/
Best of luck to you.
Edit: When I took the program a couple of years ago, it cost 3.1 million won, but you could apply for the scholarship which would shave 50% of the cost if you were chosen. This was a couple of years ago though, so things might very well have changed. |
