It's a bit deceiving when most of the "before" pics contain bad hair, bad style glasses, no smile or makeup. |

Some of those after pictures seem to dilute the Asian features of these cartoon girls too, too much. Makes them look like polymorphous hybrids. Betcha a ton of Korean guys get plastic as well. |

There was a true story in which a Korean doctor divorced his wife after finding out she had plastic surgery. He found out after looking through her old photos.
Sad that the plastic surgery phenomenon is not just restricted to Korea, but is quite common elsewhere. For example, I hear most Iranian women get nose jobs. |

A Chinese friend of mine said that it's a running joke among Chinese that you should be careful about marrying a Korean because your kids will inherit the crappy traits that got sliced up. |

I thought that many of the 'before' photos look better than the 'after' ones. |

some of those before pictures look like they are from when they were school girls, mid puberty, terrible haircuts, and no makeup. of course they are going to look better. |

I used to teach at a high school. One of the girls I taught there has a sister attending school at my current univ. job. Over the summer, they bumped into me on campus. The high school girl I taught 4 years ago is now attending a university down the street, and has had tons of plastic surgery. Of course, as a high school student, she'd never worn make-up and was a total bookwork-type. Nice girl, but I would have sworn she'd probably never get a date in university and end up seeing a matchmaker for marriage. Since then, she has apparently had some major eye surgery, and surgery elsewhere, too. Amazingly, I could remember her by her voice.
Total transformation. Looked like a comic book character. |

Money well spent largely. Limited number of plastic surgery disasters.
Kim Tae Hee for example looks a lot different and for the better. Plastic surgery was well done and her face is balanced on different angles. Still bland as heck, but the Korean public hold her as aspirational. Bland, easy on the eye and studied Fashion Deisgn at SNU. Doesn't even need to speak when hocking goods.
Jeon Ji Hyun OTOH can still manage to look like a bug-eyed menace. |

those before pictures are almost all middle school or high school mug shots. Short hair and no make up are part of the rules. I'm sure if you got any star and cut her hair short and scrubbed the make up you would see a drastic difference. |

It is isn't any of my business if somebody elects to do plastic surgery. They have their reasons and it has nothing to do with me.
On the other hand, with all the rage about plastic surgery, I believe this is going to have severe social repercussions. As it becomes more common and cheap girls and boys will desire it. Furthermore it will never be enough. If you aren't accepting your face you never will as something will always be wrong. The end result is even lower self esteem and a face that looks...well...just off. I had Korean teenage studesnt in Canada that said the first thing they do when they make money is cut their faces up. I felt badly for some of the girls and tried tot ell them that there are guys out there that don't expect that and actually abhor it because it represents a huge lack of self respect. They were quick to point out that many women get plastic surgery in North America (some lived in LA) and I completely agreed. The difference is that most people who get it, do it to fight off age. Women fresh out of high school aren't exactly running out to change their faces. The same can be said with the men.
My girlfriend's friend is one of those racers girls and she's had her cheekbones shaved, her forehead scaled back, a crazy nosejob and her eyes done. It looked quite ridiculous but that is considered beautiful? So be it. |

Lots of articles regarding plastic surgery at the neglish page of Chosun Ilbo.
There are many aspects of Korean culture and society foreingers should embrace to become better human beings, but this focus on plastic surgery doesn't appear to be all that good. |
