My co-teacher at my public school informed me that I'll lose paid holidays for days the school is closed (i.e. holidays).

She said I'll lose 3 days of paid vacation because of that. Is this the case for other teachers?

Complete horsecrap. Your vacation days are separate from national holidays.

If your contract says your vacation if 10 consecutive days, it includes weekends or holidays that fall under those 10 days. Is this what you mean?

I have 20 paid holidays. Because of days the school is closed the teacher says I have to make those days a "paid holiday", otherwise I won't be paid for those days the school is closed.

who is your contract with? gepik, epik, smoe? and 20 paid holidays or 20 paid vacation days. mine is 20 days vacation, not including weekends, holidays, etc... sounds like your co-teacher has no idea whats going on.

GEPIK.

She says I don't HAVE to use my paid vacation days, but then I won't be paid for the days the school is closed.

I work for EPIK and want to take my winter vacation days starting December 31st so I can be out of the country for New Years. Due to the way my contract was written they count the weekend and New Years Day as my vacation days....so in my opinion I am getting screwed out of three vacation days....unfortunately I tried to explain why I didn't think this was fair and my coteachers got really mad and didn't talk to me for a few days until I apologized for arguing the point....so I gave up on it...oh well. I won't sign a renewal contract next year unless it says not to include holidays and weekends.

I'm not sure which days off you are refering to.

For days that are not holidays ie the school added another day off for Chuseok, I had to take a paid holiday. The Korean teachers need to as well.

For red letter days, I don't need to use a paid holiday. This should be in your contract.

I'm not sure how days off for H1N1 will be treated yet.

Does that help?

your school should NOT be counting weekends and national holidays (christmas day, new years day, etc.). your contract should state something like "20 paid working days of vacation, not including national holidays." i would contact the EPIK coordinator for this; your co-teacher is acting like she's 5. ridiculous.

GEPIK as well.
My school had 3 days off for its birthday back in May. They're trying to steal 2 of my vacation days now because they told me not to come in for the 3. One was apparently a freebie. The other 2 were supposed to be vacation or something, but the principal changed his mind and said I didn't have to use vacation days. Now he claims he never said that. My coteacher had me fill out the little day-off form writing "vacation" not knowing any better (having been here for just a couple months) I did so. Now, it's all about "the form says" and "why would you write that?"

I wrote whatever I was told to write. My school has so little English they were always saying strange things or calling things oddly.

in the future, never let them rush you to sign things or agree to things. take your time and tell them you need to think about it.

it was at my first PS gig. the principal was a tyrant and a jackass.

at my next PS gig, i got lots of time to write reports from home (read: not go into school when i wasn't needed - about a month-, but instead submit a 3 or 4 page document saying what could be improved at the school.)

some principals are nice, some aren't.
