I thought I just had to do 3 weeks of winter camp and 3 weeks of summer camp.
The Principal wants me to do 2 weeks of spring camp in February. It'll be 4 periods a day of 20 grade 4 students.
I won't be paid extra for this.
Can I say no to this? |

3 weeks winter and 3 weeks summer. Nothing about spring camp.
I'm with GEPIK. |

not sure then, my contract just says camps when school is not in session. but your principal can ask you to teach those camps if he wants. plus, it sounds like you are going to be desk warming in there anyway, maybe the camps will make the day go by faster |

that really sucks, butyou can't refuse; you're contracted to teach 22 class hours a week. it sounds like your spring camp will be 20 hours/week. |

You can't refuse. Depending on the school, some teachers will have to desk warm, some have no camps and will be allowed to go home, or teach Korean teachers English.
Hopefully they will let me go home. |

Yeah, agreed with other posters.
But there are other stipulations in favor of FTs like sick leave, etc. |

The fall 09 EPIK contracts say you can only take 3 sick days a year without doctors notes and every single sick day afterwards must have a doctor's note...I don't know what it's like for GEPIK but I'd imagine it's probably the same |

So I could take sick leave for the entire spring camp?
The wife really wants to go on a trip for a few weeks. Winter vacation is ruined cause of camps and it was reduced to three weeks from the swine flu scare, so now all there's left is February vacation.
Won't my co-teacher/VP/P be SUPER upset, possibly making my life worse, thus making me super bitter? |

sounds like you're getting the massive (Korean) shaft but as others note, you're kind of SOL.
out of curiosity though, did you get time to take your contract allowed vacation? You probably have the usual 4 weeks, which would mean if you squeezed in 2 in the summer and 2 in the winter, it was by the skin of your teeth.
one way to avoid this shaft next year is to resign with the same school, because the 2 weeks of home leave automatically eliminates any further camps. |

Wait a minute here. WHEN is a spring camp? I'm with GEPIK, and we have from the very end of December until the beginning of March off, with the exception of a few days in February. So, is this Spring camp supposed to be in that last week of February or what?
Also, the contract says that we can use our vacation days whenever we want as long as school is NOT in session. It also mentions summer and winter camps. They CANNOT schedule you to teach camps every day of the breaks and deny you your vacation days. Also, it doesn't say that we MUST use our vacation during the summer or the winter.
Tell them you want to use your vacation days. Use them. Of course, be flexible, but don't let them take your guaranteed time from you. |

they can't deny you using your contracted vacation days, but they can have you teach any day that isn't considered contracted vacation. that means, making you teach camp or whatever every day of the school break, except during your vacation.

public school contracts usually do say we can only take our vacations during the school break times (summer and winter). some schools may make allowances for their teachers, but don't count on it. |

Not EVERY day. M-F yes (except for holidays) but not Saturday or Sunday. |

^ whoops, i thought that was a given.
anyways, people so often act on here as if the school's vacation time is their vacation time too, and while in some cases it's true, it usually isn't. teaching so much camp obviously sucks, but it's within the rights of our contracts. |

yeah, doing a lot of camps is fine, but if you are teaching regular class, then winter camps, then spring camps, then regular class again, you don't get the opportunity to use the vacation. That's not right. |
