I'm currently working at a hagwon outside of Seoul. It's an adult hagwon, so I have to pay airfare, apartment rent, utilities, etc. Also, I have a split shift, so I work 7-9am, then 4-10pm. Also, I'm the only foreigner.
I'm not a huge fan of these terms, and I know I could be getting better. It's not that the directors were trying to deceive me, but I'd rather be in Seoul, plus at a school that has other foreigners. I've discussed this with my director, and I think that they may change my shift to an afternoon shift, but
I'm wondering how the process of changing hagwons mid-contract works. If I get a letter of discharge or recommendation from my current Hagwon, can I skip the whole apostille and visa process or do I have to go through that again?
I've asked my director if he would be willing to discharge me to another school, and he didn't say one way or another. He seemed unhappy at the prospect, but I may be able to convince him to do this.
And lastly, does anyone know of any great hagwons or public schools in the Seoul area? I want to be in a school with other foreigners, in a interesting part of Seoul like Hong-ik University or Itaewon if possible. I found this link on the job board

Does anyone have any experience with SeoulESL? Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I hope to sort this out soon. |

Itaewon doesn't really have any English Hagwons. I have lived here for 7 years and have only seen one, near the chunghwa apartments. I can't remember the name off-hand but if you really need to know, I could post it in here some other time. There are a lot better areas of Seoul to live in anyway. you don't want the possibility of getting stuck in the rut of drinking-teaching, drinking-teaching that so many people engage in that live in and around Itaewon (including myself- took me a couple years to get my act together). Hongik has loads of Hagwons, but it seems as though there are quite a few teachers that want to work in that area, so good luck. I would recommend anything in Gangnam/Apgujeong/Gyodae and Mokdong as these areas have a plethora of Hagwons and are central Seoul, making other parts of Seoul easily accessible. They are also nice areas. |
