I am thinking of showing the movie, The Breakfast Club to a class of third graders in middle school. the movie, i just checked, is rated R. I was surprised. They talk about sex, smoke marijuana, and use a few bad words, but it really isn't a bad movie.

do others think this movie would be inappropriate? the only part i really worry about is when "the brain" is checking out "the princess" and has to hide his... boner.

thoughts?

I'd show it to educate my middle schoolers about pot. They like to say, "teacher, he is drink marijuana". They are grossly misinformed on the whole thing.

It's good movie, for American teenagers.
I think you might land in hot water if you show that movie to Korean 9th graders.
Personally if I had watched that movie when I was in year 9, I'd been bored. It had nothing to do with my reality, then.
My Year 9 English teacher made us read "Alice doesn't live here anymore", and "Shifting Hearts". year 10 we read "puberty blues".
What I remember is wanting to go and do 'cool' stuffs in the book like having sex, going to night clubs, dances, fighting, etc.
Never did do them things (we were brainless boys) but we never thought about consequences, either.

I have showed rated R movies to my high school. But they are on topic, say halloween, or some topic.

We did Chucky, and Friday the 13th last month.

My school didn't mind. I told my teachers the kids watch much worste movies online during lunch.

Last week I walked in they had some Naver thing going where a Korean kid jumped off a mountain after the big test. I guess he failed. Another video they watched was a student who hung himself.

Yeah, the thing is, they don't mind horror.
They do mind the sex thing.
How would you explain the "hot meat injection"?
Me, I got in trouble for showing picture of Miss World contestant from Korea in a bikini during teachers' conversation class.
It's the good ol' "No sex please, we're Brit... Koreans", all over again.

It's a little dated at this point. I mean, I love it, but very 80s.

Would you show it with subtitles? Korean or English subs? Honestly, they won't understand a lot of the random stuff like "hot beef injection" (and the ones that do won't admit to a teacher that they do). And how on earth will they translate that?

I wouldn't show it to MSers.

Degrassi did a tribute episode which is shorter and probably safer in language. It doesn't compare to BC but it might be more suited for a class since it is more recent and again shorter.

You can download it at http://www.degrassi-boards.com/showthread.php?t=39656 Episode 316 "Take On Me"

It's likely the language used is NOT on their level (i.e. middle school). How are you going to conduct your lesson exactly? I suggest you download some episodes of Saved By The Bell.

My coteacher and I showed the end of Dead Man Walking to our 3rd year middle school kids. I was uncomfortable with it (spoiler alert - he dies) but she said it was fine and the kids were in shock/awe.

On a related note, a friend who works at a local academy has one of my students in the evening who told her I showed a "sexy" movie to her class. Shocked I had NO idea WHAT she was talking about. Went back and checked my old plans, can't figure out what she was talking about.

Like others said, violence and horror are nothing but ANYTHiNG remotely related to sex is a big no-no. I.E. do it at your own risk.
