So I have been working at a hagwon for about ten months and I was told that once I arrived that I would get my diploma back. I never got it back and when I asked my director for it she said that she has to hold on to it, to insure my stay at this Hagwon. I know my diploma is in good hands but I am going home &coming back for the holidays, and I want to take it back home. Also, it is my origional diploma, I worked hard for it an it is my personal property. Plus, know that she has told me this, I kinda want it back even more. Does anyone know what I should do? Help!

Your diploma is not in good hands. Your boss is blackmailing you.

I got mine back by making up some convoluted story about how I needed to send it to my father because he needed to show our insurance company proof that I graduated from a university and then he needs it to cancel my (insert something official sounding) and just keep going on and on referring to how some government/state/province agency needs it.

Granted, my director never said that he *had* to hold on to it in order for me to stay at the hagwon. If you already have your visa and ARC, your hagwon doesn't need your original diploma anymore.

I had a boss try this. I stood there and said, no, I want it now. I got it back because blackmailing me doesn't work. If you let them do it to you, then you get exactly what you deserve.

To insure your stay at that hagwon?!

Your not a slave. You can leave that hagwon any time you want.

Tell her so.

DEMAND YOUR DIPLOMA BACK IMMEDIATELY!

Cool

You can have your university make another copy of your diploma. I had another copy of mine made when I sent my original to Korea. Cost me $50.

Hold your director's son/daughter in an undisclosed location with a water heater and a box of ramen. When you get questioned of his/her whereabouts, just reply "I am holding him/her to make sure I get paid."
Problem solved.

This is just the tip of the ice berg of things that 'nice' bosses will do to their workers.

Seriously take a look at things your boss is doing, I bet there is far more shady stuff you just aren't aware of, all smiles up front while taking money out of your back pocket.

Get your diploma back, your boss has no right to keep it.

couple suggestions from previous threads

sit in his office and wait. Ask for the diploma and wait. When he informs you your class is starting, respond with 'no diploma, no teachee', ask for your diploma again and hold out your hand. wait. repeat as necessary.

---
Go to your boss's office, call your embassy, tell them that he has your diploma, let them speak to the cretin. Get your diploma. .

This happened to me at my first job. I asked several times to get it back, and he hemmed and hawed, saying he wanted to make sure it was safe, what did I really need it for right now?, etc.

Eventually, I went into his office at the end of the school day and asked him if he had lost my diploma, and if that was the case I needed to know right away so I could order a replacement. He insisted that he hadn't, but I refused to believe him, and insisted he show it to me to prove he hadn't lost it. As soon as he showed it to me I snatched it out of his hands, told him he was never getting it back, and I took it home.

The less confrontational way would be to just get your university to replace it and let your boss go on thinking he's pulled one over on you. Depending on your uni's replacement procedure, that may or may not be feasible.

why is the mentality of this board: "YOU MUST BE A BADASS AT ALL TIME OR GET SCREWED ROYALLY"

"GIVE ME MY DIPLOMA OR I WILL CALL IMMIGRATION ON YOU SWINE"

how about... just once in a while... ignore the problem and chill out

i've been doing that for 25 years. i still get laid

Sure, most people prefer not to be confrontational. However, there are certain moments in your life when you need to stand up for yourself or risk having people walk all over you. So, I sincerely hope that you have not made yourself into a human doormat.

Get it back!

Do NOT let them keep it.

My second year my hakwon gave me the same shit-story, and then LOST my diploma. It was such a pain ordering a new one!

Stand there and demand it from them, don't back down, get it back immediately.

i don't live my life in a "me vs. them" way. thus people don't even try to treat me unfairly

All infractions of love and equity in our social relations are
speedily punished. They are punished by fear. Whilst I stand in
simple relations to my fellow-man, I have no displeasure in meeting
him. We meet as water meets water, or as two currents of air mix,
with perfect diffusion and interpenetration of nature. But as soon
as there is any departure from simplicity, and attempt at halfness,
or good for me that is not good for him, my neighbour feels the
wrong; he shrinks from me as far as I have shrunk from him; his eyes
no longer seek mine; there is war between us; there is hate in him
and fear in me.
