Hi Everyone,

I applied to EPIK with my boyfriend. We had our interview in Oct and passed that and the asked us to send our documents to South Korea. They received our documents and said they were going to process our applications and that we have to wait 10-15 days for our Visa number. Recently, our recruiter emailed my boyfriend and notified him that EPIK had "canceled or failed" his application. They didn't really give a reason why.

Any insight on why this could be? Has this ever happened to anyone? Thanks to all of those that reply to this post. I appreciate all the info you can give regarding this matter.

oh wow dang. Now I'm scared. I've gone through all that except I haven't sent of my docs yet. Never knew there was still a chance of getting denied even after the interview and such.

Do a search of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) last spring, they cancelled the contracts of people 1 day before they were due to fly here. Nothing is assured in the world of Korea. Buy a refundable ticket even if it costs extra.

As far as why your boyfriend was rejected it could be a number of reasons:
1. He has a Master degree but no Bachelor;
2. He admitted to having had a drink in the initial probing questions;
3. He signed a contract to come here and backed out (even with a Hagwon);
4. Someone didn't like his picture;
5. A million other possible reasons.

My advice, apply for JET in Japan and forget EPIK, JET is a better paying, and better organised program and if they overhired, they would let you work rather than admit it.

I suspect the reason is - your boyfriend is not a young, blond female.

Tell him to forget about it and move on to another application.
This is like asking "why did he/she dump me?". Answering this question yourself destroys your soul. When you get the answer, it hurts even more. So, don't go there, girlfriend. Move on.

Are you even sure it was the main EPIK program you were interviewed for and accepted for in Oct ? Was it maybe a job that had an 'EPIK' contract promoted instead or maybe an after school job in a public school?'

The reason I ask is that it does not make sense to be told you were going to get your visa NUMBER issued in 10-15 days

EPIK does not issue visa numbers - only the immigration office does .
If you have a genuine EPIK job you will be getting a notice of appointment from the Office of education you are going to - and only in January - certainly not 10-15 days.

Also EPIK is not keen to hire couples, especially unmarried ones, let alone sort the housing for them. Were you both to be teaching together int his failed appointment?

Who is now holding your papers? If it is the EPIK office on Korea ( you can check the address on their website) or was it an agent getting them first in Korea ? You do need to investigate further, especially if you are being given no reason for the cancellation.

Did you ever get a reason as to why your EPIK jobs were cancelled ?

JET may well be better, but it takes a year to complete the hiring process (unless things have changed).

Yep, still takes quite awhile, and it can all be a crapshoot in the end with getting the position.

As usual, good observations from blonderesearcher, it would be interesting to know the exact situation with the OP's other.

EPIK, & Korea generally, is getting more ****ed all the time.

JET is wonderful but the application process is long & involved(helps keep down the freak factor). This yr.'s deadline for Canadians is Nov. 27. Don't miss it.

You can't be older than around 40 by April 1, 2010. I don't know why they say "around 40" in the eligibility section. I guess they'd let a 41-year-old in if they have an amazing application.

Thats it. They're only hiring females nowadays..
They're not really concerned about quality, they just want to lessen the number of Korean women dating foreign guys.
