The holidays are near, and I figure that it is time to get out there and do some good deeds. Volunteer work.

Are there any threads on this topic? Or suggestions?

You can spread garbage on the road to create employment. You can go to the park to teach incorrect english to increase demand for english teachers. You can get into vehicular accidents to increase insurance claims. In addition, you can ride the subway back and forth on the same line for free to increase the mass pushed by the train and subsequent natural gas used to burn to create the electricity. You can hire taxis, but change your mind just as it stops so as to burn more oil for the re-acceleration of the taxi. You can go to the free water stations and let your bottle overflow for minutes to hours. You can open doors of department stores and prop them so as to let heat escape, creating inflation for the customers. You can double/triple bag your bananas when you shop at the grocery store. You can go to work yet just pretend to talk *but you're just moving your lips and moving your arms... so as to "look like you are teaching" on the CCTv spy cameras. You can photocopy extra sheets at school and recycle them to create demand for paper. You can ride the elevator up and down until you get tired. You can turn off the heat in your apartment to increase your neighbor's heat bills. You can spill stuff all over the floor by accident to create demand for janitorial services. You can go to the store and buy your items in 10 won coins. You can bring in outside western food into the restaurant and simply order 1 roll of kimbap while demanding the free side dishes and water.

[quote="aimeecate"]How about volunteering at an animal shelter?

Excellent idea aimeecate. But, for most of my life I have always been involved with helping animals. I'd like to do something different for a change.

Stay classy caribmon. Rolling Eyes

Volunteering is great, just make sure it's 'approved.'

Not sure how strict people are about this, but better safe than sorry.

As I said in my PM, OP, there are certain people on this board who are about as much use as a kick in the face when it comes to asking about volunteering.

Orphanages and old people's homes always love it if you come sit and talk/listen to people for a few hours.

Host a charity event (raising money) for a local abused women's shelter (I know of one in Gumi that works with battered foreign brides if you're looking for a good cause).

Help handicapped folks go to a park/play soccer.

Korean churches do a LOT of volunteer work if that's your thing. (Personally, I can't take the preaching).

Teach at an abused teen's shelter.

Help clean up some local mountain or nature preserve.

I found most of these kinds of opportunities through Korean friends, the YMCA, and networking with other foreigners in Korea (mostly not English teachers--see below).

Be aware that an E-2 visa technically does not allow any volunteer work, so don't tell anyone you're doing it.

Although you can get permission from immigration.

IF your boss agrees to it. And that's a pretty big if. If you're teaching English in your volunteer gig (like to orphans or at risk youth), they will say no. And you have to register & pay the fee for each place you'll volunteer, so if you like to hop around, it adds up quickly.

Personally (and this is in no way an admission of or encouragement in breaking the law), I believe that were one to volunteer in Korea, and be "caught" doing so illegally and punished (fined or arrested or kicked out), they should raise a big stink about it in the media and draw attention to the issue. Because they were freaking HELPING out the country. It'll change the immigratiion law--especially if said volunteer is a pretty, young blonde thing who could then go on the "Chatting with the Beauties" show and tell everyone about how stupid this law is.

I'm dead serious.

I agree with you. It's not like teaching privates, there's a wider societal benefit from volunteering so I fail to see why it's an issue. As it is, my boss had agreed prior to me leaving the UK to allow me to do it so there's no issue here.

Indeed. However, the sarcasm in the post did make me chuckle. Very Happy
