Greetings and salutations, ladies and gentlemen.

I was hoping that someone could give me the skinny on buying an Xbox 360 here in lovely K-Land.

More specifically:

If I buy a Korean console, will I be able to get games in English?
If I mod the console, will games with the latest firmware upgrades still run?
Where would you suggest buying from? Homeplus? Yongsan? Does it matter?
How much should I be paying for a new/used console?

Any suggestions and/or advice would be most gratefully appreciated!

I purchased a new Korean xbox online through interpark, I forget the price but it was around the ~250,000W range. Which is significantly cheaper than any of the department stores I've been to (Emart, homeplus, toys 'r' us etc.)

Your best bet will be to wait for someone selling their xbox on Daves. Usually posters tend to sell around the 200-220,000W range.

You can buy games @ yongsan. The game box artwork is done in Korean, but the entire game plays in English (in my experience).

If you mod your console, expect your games to run fairly well for the next year or so until Microsoft decides to update the dashboard (which is a yearly thing). In which case, you're going to have to update your modded xbox at yongsan for a price each year to continue playing the latest games (or find a friend to mod it for you annually)

If you don't play xbox live, then modding isnt a problem for you. However, if you DO want to play live on a modded box, there is a good risk you might get banned.

Don't expect to play on Live with a modded 360.

It's important to note that these consoles were not bricked, just banned from Live. If I were in the market for a 360, I'd think about looking for a recently banned, modded one, and play Oblivion and Fallout 3 until my heart is content.

Yeah, the best advice you'll get on here really concerns whether you want to use Xbox Live or not. If you want to use Live a lot, you should get a new or used Xbox (newer the better, though everyone gets one free replacement in the case of the Red Ring of Death malarky - I did that and within a week had a new 2009 model delivered to my door) that isn't modded, and enjoy the wide selection of used and new games at Yongsan.

You can expect to pay about 10-20,000 won for games that are a few years old, 20-35,000 for games less than a year old and up to 50,000-60,000 for brand, spanking new games (obviously not second-hand). Of course, popularity plays an issue too. The main point, though, is that none of the games are too expensive (especially if you come from the UK, like I do, where games cost a fortune!)

If you're not planning on using Live much, then you might as well pick up a cheap, modded console and download/buy pirate games for 10,000 a pop. I don't play Live much but I do enjoy it enough sometimes to make it worth having an unmodded Xbox.

Oh, and obviously, if your modded Xbox goes RROD then you'll just have to chuck it and buy a new one.

As for how much to pay...well, I'd say around 200,000-250,000 for a new/modded one with no games...perhaps the same for a used one with a few games or a bit more for a modded/used one with lots of games. I must admit, I'm a bit out the loop for that. I paid 250,000 over 2 years ago, I think, for an almost new one from Yongsan. It lasted almost 2 years until the RROD kicked in (it was a 2006 model), then I got my brand spanking new one.

Language of games - almost all the games are in English with a Korean language manual. However, not all. Check the back of the boxes and don't be scared to ask the guys in Yongsan - they're usually completely honest about it. There are a very few games that aren't released in English in Korea, so then you check out Play-asia.com for English versions of Asian region games.

Of course, if you go with the modded route, that won't be an issue.

You got options, my friend. Personbally, I'd recommend a normal Xbox and get Live as it's a good way to fight the boredom on a cold winter night - check out the Gamertag thread, we already have about 10 people on there who are playing on Live regularly. Just pick some games they play and you have insta-playing partners (play Fifa 10! I need someone to play with!)

Thanks for the tips, chaps.

I'm not bothered about playing games online, so I'll probably seek out a second-hand modded console.

Cheers!
