Can anybody please shed some light on what (if any) the requirements the South Korean Govt imposes?

This is what I have heard and want to confirm.

Need a Basic Degree
Need an TESOL Diploma.

It is the second criteria that I need clarification. Does the Govt want a qualification that is called a Diploma? Or do they require a TESOL qualification that is xx number of hours (like 120 hrs)?

any website links would be appreciated as well.

My reason is that we offer TESOL programmes and we want to ensure we advise our students accurately.

There is only a requirement for a 4 year degree (any field).

Anything above and beyond that is up to individual employers.

By the way, there's no "t" in Korean

Essentially the requirements are a degree from a 4-year college / university and a passport from a native-speaking English country.

You (usually) would get a raise of about 100,000 won per month if you had some kind of tefl / tesl certification. As far as I know, the general requirement for a tefl / tesl course to count is that it is at least a 100 hour course.

3 year degrees are acceptable if you are from a country that offers that as a norm (e.g. the UK).

Thanks everybody for your responses. Thank God for the internet!

I am querying specifically on Korean nationals.... do they need different qualifications? As opposed to a native speaking teacher?

I don't think many native English speakers will know what Korean teachers need to be hired. Since the school hiring the teacher will almost always never be proficient in English, the only thing they have to go on are tests. So, I imagine they look at English scores and use some number to hire.

You might be better off asking schools directly.

If you are asking about requirements of Korean parents F-4 visa holders, it's the same; basic bachelor degree.
If you are asking about requirements of Korean born F-4 visa holders, it's the basic bachelor degree + secondary school in E-7 countries.
If you are asking about citizens of Korea teaching English, they have it much tougher, but degree wise, it's on an Education degree.

It depends. If you are going for a public school job...you must also submit a resume, a personal essay, a CBC, and drug tests. A copy of your degree and transcripts are required as well.

And if you are on an E-2 visa, you must submit all these documents as well, no matter where you work.

And the TESOL "diploma" is not a requirement at all...although if you have it you can get an extra 100,000 won a month...but it MUST be at least 100 hours, although some places ask for 120 hours.
