In two weeks I will have finished working in Uljin at the high school. They are asking me to stay a second year.
Concidering i seen many post on people talking how they braved the country side for one year and didn't go nuts, would I be nuts for staying two years?
I have been offered a job in a different school provence, Jeollanamdo Provincial Office of Education Public Schools.
I did a google earth on this location though and it seemed even worste off then Uljin. This school also wants me to start in April, thats a long time away.
Or I could not sign and perhaps get a job in inchun in a few weeks.
Would you hold out for a city job or stay in the country? |

Jeollanamdo is lovely. I live there, the people are very sweet. Its countryside. Really countryside. But it can be quite pretty. Plus contracts tend to be quite nice here because its not "OMG!!! SEOUL/BUSAN!!!"
Plus the kids are sweet little angels*.

My biggest issue with the countryside, no one age 20-40. I could do without the shops and all. But I do like to meet people and make friends.
If I stay they give a 2 week paid vacation and plane ticket home for xmas, and no school all January. Could go to Japan or Taiwan for a month.
But then come back and be bored for a year.
I think I make it a goal this year to find me a wife .
I am being offered a job with Canadian Conenction. I am #22 on there list. But I am assuming thats quite low withen the school district. So 1st come 1st server on location in that provence. They also dont start until April sometime. Hence December - April is a big break. One could blow 6-10k in four months off. |

I'm a year and 4 months into my second year and I wish I had left. This place is starting to drive me nuts. I loved the first year, but I'm not liking the second year. |

Yea, living in the country can drive you nuts after awhile. The school teachers are great as well as the students. I think they placed me at the highest school in the county.
As for getting January and February off. I am assuming I will get Dec 23- Jan 7th off, come back for one week, then a two week vacation what is winter break. Then work 1 week, and have another 2 week vacation, spring break. I will be paid for all if they do what they did last year.
At the moment, my city is 2 hours from Po-Hong 3 from Dague 5 from Seoul and 3 to Busan. It is the lonely part that drives me nuts. If I hated the teachers, principle or students it would be so easy to make a choice.
Just wish there was a 20-40 population group to hang out with.
My school offered last Friday I could stay but no contract and job offers come in.
Do you think they would kill me if I accepted another offer? I dont think they bought my plane ticket yet. Even if they have no teacher, they really dont need one tell March.

I think they're crazy for wanting to hire you for another year. If they knew how bad you were at spelling and grammar, they would be horrified about letting you teach people English. I'm horrified. Come on, you're an English teacher! There is no excuse for this crap, even if this is a message board that you consider informal.

Countryside is amazing...IMO. People are so nice, kids are so nice, contracts and housing is really good. Bills are super cheap...i could go on, but you get the picture.
There are downsides to the countryside, shopping isnt as good and all...but you know what who cares? If its that big of a deal, spend a bit of money and get a car, i did, made all the downsides go away. Even still i spend most of my free time in the small town, or at work. I use my car to go visit the places i want to see in Korea. I find there is plenty to do, and lots of people to meet in small areas. |

Hey,
The countryside isn't so bad. I'm starting my 3rd year out in the middle of nowhere. By middle of nowhere, I mean we have a bar, one bowling alley and a couple of ma and pa stores here and there. Have no complaints at all. Loving it out here. Learn the language and life is grand I make my way to Seoul maybe once a month and that's about the only time I see another foreigner.
If you like it, renew. If not, find somewhere else. |

Countryside life in Korea was one thing I missed out on.
Would have liked to try it, but after the first year, always dreaded the thought of moving my stuff. |
