|
|
My fathers asked me to get him a copy if it's cheaper than nz. Have any of you bought a copy? How much did you pay? Where from??
I live in daegu and so would rather hear from others before going on the hunt. Two years ago I tried to get xp in English and had a he'll of a time...most retailers/computer markets don't carry english versions. Ceptfor yongsan in Seoul
I think home premium (upgrade pack?) is the one I'm after,
Any help appreciated.
Sigh at the spelling corrections the iPod does lol |

I think you have to buy the Korean one here, and I'd bet it's no cheaper if you are able to get English Windows 7.
What you need to do is buy an upgrade version and install it as a regular version. There are tricks on the web about how to do this. Google it.
Save yourself some money. |

Well the price of upgrade and full version on the Korean MS Store site is pretty close to US Price x Exchange Rate. I would recommend looking for an OEM version at Yongsan or Technomart as well. Or find a friend with en .edu address and get Win7 and Office Pro 2007 together for about 100 US.
The Windows 7 you find here would probably be in Korean though. There are language packs to fix that (or get Ultimate except that's ridiculously overpriced). |

Or you could just buy the English DSP (OEM) disc for about 130k for HP, 170k for Pro or 250k for Ultimate. check pc.danawa.com for exact prices. |

So you're smiling that you PAID for what is probably a pirated copy you could have gotten for free from torrents? OK...that's kinda stupid.
Just checked and HP can be had for 134k, Pro for 178k, and Ultimate for 243k. These prices are identical to the prices for the Korean version. |

I paid $30 from mine, direct from Microsoft via student discount download. |

Bass,
How easy is to convince microsoft you're a student, if you aren't one?
$30 is cheap. |

All you need is a .edu address in the USA -- Canada was excluded, but I now see they say Canadians may need to supply proof of coursework -- (and they claim you must be taking at least .5 credits this semester, although I don't know that they actually check -- mine was approved within minutes).
Not sure if the deal is still on, but I think it might be.
If you don't have a .edu address, I think you're SOL, unless you have a friend with one who can help by getting the information sent to them. I imagine they names on the .edu address and your credit card would have to match. Not sure if you'd be able to just copy/paste the download address or would have to open your friend's e-mail and click directly on the download link to make it work.
My MA classes are with a school in the USA, so I was able to use that. Was able to download from Korea with no issues. It's called an upgrade, but I was able to install mine as a full version (there are work-arounds to do this, and oddly, it's legal). When I installed mine, I just chose "custom install" and wiped everything on the HDD to make it work. If that doesn't work for you, then there are other ways on the web that are legal and allow it to work. Microsoft officially claims this can't be done, but it can, and there is a whole site dedicated to how this can be easily/legally done. In my case, Custom Install worked with no issues. Bluelake did the same.
If anyone buys this and runs into problems, just PM me.
I got the professional version for the same price as home premium, so be sure to hunt around for that option, if it's still there:

They basically verify your .edu address, then e-mail you a download link with a product key for what you buy. Honestly, I wouldn't bother getting the backup media, although I did. I had it sent to my parent's house. My father informed me that the charges were on my most recent credit card bill, and everything was legit. |

If you already have Vista, you might want to keep it. I've read that in some ways Windows 7 is a step down from Vista that is kept updated. |

I have Win7 (and previously had Vista). I like Win7 A LOT more than Vista. I have had no major problems with it.
Korea also has a student discount program (for the Korean version):
