I love teaching my students about Thanksgiving. I give them the real story (that is, beginning, middle AND ending parts). Sorry to my American pals. The kids listen with rapture! They really understand me too since they already understand the concept of "foreign occupation".

We just copied the Brits, just like the Aussies, Canadians and the Kiwis...oh, and can't leave out the Boers!

The ending part? As in we all enjoyed turkey and corn and lived happily ever after? What other ending could you be talking about?

I'm speaking of the fate of hundreds of thousands of native Americans, killed because the colonial groups wanted rights to their land without arguments. That ending.

asams, I hope you were joking.

And yes, I also tell my students that these kind of colonial actions happened in many other countries as well, not just America.

To be fair, the first thanksgiving did not occur in the USA, but in the British colonies.

The rest, well, that was all us. And we kicked butt at it, too! Twisted Evil

Of course I'm joking. Having a degree in History I realize how much American textbooks, and a lot of textbooks from other countries, cover up or fail to mention in depth the dark sides of their nation's history.
