I think this issue about our cultural awareness is [Swear filter dodging/Mod Edit]. As far as meaningful priorities go, I think methodology is more important. I wouldn't mind it.

Most of us aren't professional teachers even though I think most of us try to do a good job. I, for one, am not adverse to learning from somebody who really knows what works.

But I think this Korean legislator clown is just grandstanding. I've come to the conclusion that Koreans are (..and I don't really know the totally accurate word)....just plain wierd in their world view. And it carries over into their relationships with foreigners.

It's amazing to me how they can study English, even the adults, for so long........and yet understand so little about how to deal with us. I think they really are racist. Yeah.....I really do. I think it's just ingrained in them.

I almost think they're perpetually afraid of foreigners at the same time that they think they're better than foreigners. Yeah....a dichotomy.

And what makes it wierd is that the same folks that make policies that effect us WERE the same kids that will pass up a foreigner on the street and not even speak if spoken directly too. It's like they just don't want to even KNOW that we're here.

Yet somebody at government level has a vague sense that Korea needs to 'do something' in order to better relate to the global economy. Thus the legistalted ESL push.

But they get us over here and often shove us into little crackerboxes to live, tell us they can't renew our contract 3 weeks before the end-of-contract date (luckily i was able to get another job....for a 40% pay increase), assume we're all on drugs, assume we've all got criminal records...etc., etc.

And their own teachers (English teachers anyway) tolerate English classes where 30% of the students sleep or fiddle-fart around the whole period. But they want us to do these ultra-stupid 'demo' classes.

Yeah.......it's like Amerika.....i.e. an imitation Amerika. Only wierder.

I like it enough to stay one more year but after this last 2.5 years, my opinion about it/them has changed a bit. They're OK if you can get'm out of this environment. But over here.......it really can get oppressive.

I hate to disagree bass, but the last thread wasn't killed because it might scare anyone...it just had too many idiots posting stupid 'funny' things. Even this thread has this one

Quote:
Remember that beautiful Dokdo belongs to Korea; the father land!

You must always bow to the principal.

You must accept all schedule changes; even if it gives you only five minutes; and that goes for winter and summer camps, too.

You must never stare down or raise your voice to your Principal, and never cause your co-teacher to lose face in front of others.

You should study Korean during your free time.

You should play volley ball; unless you want to socially isolate yourself.

Never refill your shot glass of soju yourself. You must drink until you are intoxicated.

If you are a foreign male, then you must never touch Korean women.

This stuff is racist stereotyping. We accuse the Koreans of doing it all the time, and then when we do it on Daves it's supposed to be a laugh a minute. It's not. Two wrongs don't make a right and all that guff. I'm not an apologist or any of that, but I hate it when a decent thread gets ruined by people trying to be all 'awesome'.

There were other posts in this thread that made the same kind of joke, but did it in a way that is both amusing and not offensive. cruisemonkey's post is a gem, and made me actually lol!!

The exam will be multiple choice:

Quote:
1. Korea has ______ seasons.
a. two
b. three
c. four
d. five
e. moon

2. Kimchie is _______.
a. spicy
b. made with cabbage
c. made with radishes
d. usually fremented
e. all the above

3. 이순신 was ________.
a. the car in the 'Dukes of Hazard'
b. the mayor of Hansan-Do
c. Japanese
d. Chinese
e. the greatest person to have ever lived on earth

Nothing racist in that.

It was meant to be humorous. Sorry that it offended you. If you cared to look deeper into what I said, then you will also see a lot of truth to it, too. Have you work here long?

Don't take it to heart. I don't disagree that there is some truth in what you wrote...(bowing to the principal etc), however, the mods don't care. I was commenting about the reasons why the mods remove threads. Passive racist sterotyping and racebaiting such as your Dokdo comment make the mods (and other folk too) angry, and threads get removed.

I didn't find what you wrote incredibly humorous. Sorry. It was cheap racist crap. Like if a Korean writes that foreigners are all Losers back Home who have AIDS....it's just stereotyping and racist.

As for how long I have taught here...that's none of your business...but if you're super keen to find out you can do one of two things...look at my join date and guess...or look at my first few posts on here (they were about how horrible my school was). Cheers, and have a lovely weekend!

Do you know how many Koreans have told me and attempted to indoctrinate me about Dokdo belonging to Korea? Sorry, there is nothing racist about what I said here. Because it is true! That's what I have been told by them on a number of occasions.

Why is it people like you are so quick to scream out Racist! Racist! Racist! Frankly, I think that it is very sickening. I think that you are a fruit cake. I bet that you think that I am white, because you accuse me of being a racist, huh? Your use of the word "racist" against another must give you the feeling of moral superiority; when in fact, it makes you look like an ignorant fool.

The date you signed on to Daves has nothing to do with how long you have been in Korea. I have been here for 5 years, but what does the sign up date say? Laughing

Have a nice weekend. Bye-bye! Razz

Hello there. Wow! Fruity response there. Let me be clear on what I am saying here...there is a difference between something being racist in nature, and something that uses racist stereotypes. Your comments are based on perceived stereotypes. It's simple.

I don't think you're white. I don't think about what colour you are at all. I don't really care about you. It's nothing personal, I was just saying that the last thread was pulled because people were making comments similar to yours and the mods found that the thread had descended into racial stereotyping.

I don't care if you think that I'm a fruitcake or a cheesecake or any other kind of cake. You don't know me. Just like I don't know you.

I said that you can look at my join date and guess. Clearly the two are related in my case. I don't stereotype, so I wasn't saying that everyone here has a join date similar to their start date. No. I also explained that you can look at my first few posts because they outline some issues I had when I first arrived in Korea.

You have been here for 5 years? You choosing to play the how long have you been here card must give you the feeling of moral superiority; when in fact, it makes you look like an ignorant fool.

I don't really mean that of course. Kudos for putting in 5 years here. Nice one. I'm not claiming to know more about Korea than you, or saying that I know more of anything than you really. I have no idea how after 5 years jokes about Dokdo, bowing, losing face, studying Korean, drinking Soju and touching women stay fresh. I'm tired of them already!! I guess it's like my four year old nephew and his knock knock jokes...they just never seem boring to him.

Oh, I have never watched that show. At any rate, it really is true that dogs are perceptive of people's race and sometimes do act aggressive towards other races that they are not used to seeing.

S.Korea May Force Foreign Teachers to Learn about Nation
2009-11-26 08:12:09

A lawmaker is seeking to make it mandatory that foreigners who are hoping to work as English teachers in the nations schools or private institutes become more educated about Koreas culture and the expectations of teachers in Korea.

Representative Cho Jeon-hyuk of the ruling Grand National Party, who is also a member of the parliamentary committee on education, proposed on Thursday revisions to laws on schools and private institutes.

The revised bills seek to make it mandatory for private institutes to have foreign teachers complete educational programs on South Koreas culture and people.

Cho said most foreign teachers in the nation do not have enough of an understanding about Koreas culture and practices. He said the revisions are aimed at raising the quality of the nations English education programs by mandating that foreign teachers have better knowledge of Korea.

Scary enough, I agree with this. Not with the understanding culture (though that is helpful) but when it says the expectations of teachers in Korea. If people know what to expect when they want to come over here, how many people will it deter that'll just complain about the place? It is better to jump into something with foreknowledge then to come over with no prior knowledge.

Please elaborate. My comments are based on experiences in Korea; thanks in large part to Koreans. Which one of these are stereotypes that are not played up by Koreans? In fact, please point out where I said anything racist about Koreans. All I see is zipper giving advice to new candidates that may come here and find themselves in a situation where they might have to engage in one of these topical experiences.

0.Remember that beautiful Dokdo belongs to Korea; the father land!

1.You must always bow to the principal.

2.You must accept all schedule changes; even if it gives you only five minutes; and that goes for winter and summer camps, too.

3.You must never stare down or raise your voice to your Principal, and never cause your co-teacher to lose face in front of others.

4.You should study Korean during your free time.

5.You should play volley ball; unless you want to socially isolate yourself.

6.Never refill your shot glass of soju yourself. You must drink until you are intoxicated.

7.If you are a foreign male, then you must never touch Korean women.

I am asking you an honest question. Please explain to me about how I am employing racist stereotypes when in fact I have never seen this written here before. The points I made above are based on my experiences and interactions I have had with Koreans. Two years ago, I attended an orientation in Masan where new teachers were subject to an indoctrination film about Dokdo, and how the Japanese treated the Koreans so harshly in the past. So, I stick by my comment about Dokdo. Cool
