I found this job ad on this site. The title specifically says private lessons. Is this a scam to try to catch people offering private lessons? I don't see how this could be legal unless it is legal for native speakers to work for and be paid by a company that arranges lessons.

Quote:

1) The company might know the law and is asking for someone with a tutoring licence. (legal)
2) The company doesn't know the law and assumes people on an F visa can teach private (illegal)
3) The company just doesn't care and wants to make a quick buck.
4) Or it's the Anit-English guys lloking to get another foreigner in trouble, therefore proving we are all scum.

Phone, or reply by email.

I hope you have enough saved to pay for your ticket home and the fine... after your trial and you've spent a few days in the Immi lock-up sampling the delights of K-usine. Rolling Eyes

Uh, yeah, thanks for that. I was just asking a question. I am fully aware that teaching privates is illegal so when I saw this ad posted on this site I was curious as to why it would be posted here.

It never fails to strike me how quickly people on this site are ready to jump on anyone and be deliberately condescending, insulting, or just plain irritating when they don't have all the information related to a post. The beauty of internet message boards, I guess.

pangaea, cool down a bit! cruisemonkey has been here a bit and knows how things work.

If I were interested, I'd call the number and ask relevant questions such as: What exactly do I need to do to work at this job? If my school agrees, will you be able to provide proof to the immigration office that you are a legal business? Do you have the necessary documents that I need to show immigration and my current employer.

If it's a scam, these questions will show that you don't want to take the risk of working illegally.

Hey genius... now I'm being condescending - 'Dave's' is not operated by your donations; and, whose fault is it for not providing all the information?

I'm still waiting for the 'extra' information. Laughing

Maybe I wasn't clear about this, but I have no interest in teaching privates. I know it is illegal. I was simply asking a question and the only person who answered my question was Goon-Yang. That person also managed to do it without being rude about it. I've also been here for a while and the point of my response to cruise monkey's post was that the rolling eyes and condescension were unnecessary. I was just asking a question.

My original reply was meant to be sarcastic in general... not condescending to you personally.

Peace?

Ok, peace. Smile No offense meant. I'm feeling grumpier than usual due to my Thanksgiving cold.

Privates done through an agency are fine for all F-visa holders. The tutoring license is required when you do not use an agent because you need to be able to show that you are reporting and paying taxes on the income. If you do not have a license, you may work through an agent. The agent will withold 3.3% independent contractor tax and pay it on your behalf, with you claiming a rebate or making up the difference come tax return time. Either way is 100% legal for an F-visa holder.

It might be illegal for you and the other 20 odd thousand E-2 visa holders but for those of us on an F-2, there's no problem.

Thanks for the contact.

Dear Nick,

Should I marry Miss Park?

That would be your choice, but I don't need you or others telling me or others that teaching through an agency is illegal. It is illegal for the OP, but not for many of us who are F visa holders. Some people on the E-2 somehow think that all teachers in Korea are under the same terms, which clearly isn't the case.

Marry who you want.

I find it interesting that there is a 'sticky' saying that threads discussing privates will be deleted, and the posters warned, because teaching privates "is illegal". Yet Daves doesn't mind taking money from those wanting to advertise privates on this site. Money speaks I suppose. Confused

It's not as if the ad says "F series visa holders' only. Dave's is guilty of a double standard here.
