|
|
An innocent 22 year old Pakistani man named Ali Khan received the death sentence in 2003 from a Korean trio of judges for a murder he did not commit. In fact, he was in one of the Russia-themed bars in I'taewon sipping a few beers with a Korean-American and a Korean-Canadian when the murder took place in Ilsan-Gu, Goyang City.
A man named Samiullah who took part in the crime told the police that Khan was the culprit. Ali was forced to use the enraged brother of the victim as a translator-intepreter. This man lied to the police about Khan's statements, saying that Ali had confessed to being the murderer.
Khan was beaten into a state of unconsciousness at least twice by the police before being sentenced to death. He was imprisoned in the Daejeon City Foreigners' Detention Centre but was recently transferred to Cheonan Young Prison for Foreigners. In Daejeon, Samiullah admitted in a written statement that Ali is an innocent man. Yet, those in charge refuse to even review his case, and Ali's mental and physical health are both quite poor and prison authorities apparantly will not allow him to get proper medical treatment
A 700-strong group of expats and Koreans is trying to at least get a re-trial. The Free Ali Khan group needs support and has been told by Gonggam that they need more documents. In the meantime, Ali needs visitors to help revive his spirits, and I'm wondering if any teachers here would go to Cheonan's Young Prison with me to visit Mr. Khan. My E-Mail address is [email protected]. |

so Samiullah was also convicted of the crime? were they suspected by authorities to have done it together? |

Samiullah is in prison, but I can not recall if he went in for doing something else or not. I have not read about the case since early-Autumn and I could not find the link to the original story when searching for it yesterday.
There is an On-Line Petition that we hope will make a positive impact. Please sign it.
Thank you for sharing your interest in Mr. Khan's plight. |

I'm near Nonsan. We could meet up in Gongju City and then go see Ali together as Cheonan City is not far from Gongju City. Would you go along with me to visit Ali? |

Shouldn't President Zardari be lobbying 2MB or someone from their embassy? |

I seem to recall reading in early-Autumn that the embassy got involved. Not sure as it was awhile ago. |

A poster pointed out to me that I should have indicated in my post that Mr. Khan is an innocent man.

lol def not. skirt chasing in seoul is more important to me than visiting some guy in jail that murdered someone. it really just sounds like a prisoner sob story imo. |

korea hasn't killed anyone since 1997! I doubt he will recieve the death penalty! Korea is trying to abolish it..
there are people on death row who have murdered 10+ people..
murdering one man, I don't think will get you the death penalty...
life in prison I guess...
anyway this is terrible news, and I feel for the guy... what a nightmare..
best to call, the UN, and some international organizations,
and need to review the crime.. was his DNA found at the scene??
you tell us he is innocent..? why do you say that? becuase a man said he was innocent??
shows us all the facts from the trial so we can break it down... |

If people visit someone in jail in Korea, are they allowed to bring things for the prisoner, like food, books, that kind of thing? I'm curious as to what's allowed and not allowed. |
