|
|
Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this. I saw the thread about the open mic night in Itaewon. Are there any other open-mics or places where one might book a gig?
Background: I am a guitar-player/vocalist into folk, rock, and country. I live an hour north of Seoul. |

Gigs and open mics are easy... If you're a decent player/performer you'll have more gigs than you can handle living in Seoul.
Gigs in Hongdae and Itaewon are probably your best bet. Here are some places to check out.
Itaewon:
Stompers: Open mic every Tuesday and live music on weekends (This place has the best stage and live music scene in Itaewon IMHO)
Woodstock: Open mic every 1st and 3rd Sunday and live music on weekends (Weird vibe in here and kind of sleazy but the owner likes live music)
Rocky Mountain Tavern: Live music on weekends. (More of a sports bar but they have a pretty solid live music scene on the weekends)
Aussie Bar: Open mic on Mondays but no live music apart from that. (The place is musician owned but is also very small)
Hongdae:
Club Freebird: Live music and a nice stage... Might be a good place to break into live music in Hongdae plus the owner is friendly.
There are dozens of live music venues in Hongdae ... Expats are playing mostly at Club Freebird, Club FF, Club Ta, Club DGBD and others.
I also recommend The 99 Bar down in Songtan if you're looking for a road trip ! check out www.the99bar.com
Rhythm & Booze bar in Bucheon is a good place to play as well.
Hope this helps. |

Nothing negative, more of an FYI - If you play Tony's Aussie bar you will have Tony playing drums WITH you. No need to worry about HIS playing, just roll with it. Also, I've traveled a pretty good distance to play there and it often starts late. You may go on later than hoped. We had to take a cab home both times. Regardless, the people are good and Tony, when not stressed, is a gem. |

Stompers open mic in Itaewon has had a few comics show up but it's not a regular thing... They were welcomed though... I think The Aussie Shop is doing a spoken word open mic on Wednesdays... I've seen comics and poets show up at Woodstock as well.... All in Itaewon. |

my best bud's band just opened for arch enemy in seoul. contact large acts who are coming over and try to open for them. its certainly possible as most western acts dont know who the korean acts are and just get lumped with whoever, so if you can get on to the act beforehand you stand a chance of getting to play with them |

Excellent tips in this thread as it's something I'm considering once I move to Korea. Although I'd be DJ-ing unless I can find a band short of a bassist. |

what about classical instruments/voice? I'm a trombonist and a tenor and I would love to perform while I'm over here, but I'm not sure where I would go/look.
Anyone have any ideas? |

It's not easy being a foreigner, but I know a few ppl who have simply joined clubs (a saxophone club, for example) and have made contacts from there which have led to them performing.
A start would be to simply do a naver search for 'cafes' (or get a K speaker) that relate to your particular interest. There are a lot of Koreans who are willing to work with foreigners on musical projects, but like yourself, simply don't know how to make connections.
Warning to all: If you work professionally, be sure you have an appropriate visa. You could probably get away with it in small pub gigs, but anything else... well, you never know who's watching/ filming! |
