In North America there are currently no openly gay atheltes in the biggest pro-leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL). Europe is probably different.
The following is an article about a gay NCAA hockey player. His dad is a well know figure in the NHL.
Full Story
The focus is on gay men here. Lesbians tend to be more accepted in the sporting world which is another issue. |

The father, Brian, is a general manager. His son played hockey in NCAA. He came out last year. |

Glenn Anderson is gay. It was widely known that Anderson was gay in Edmonton during the dynasty. The dynasty was in the 80's, so the NHL at least is fine with gay players. |

All pro sports seem pretty gay to me. All the big muscular sweaty men running around without any women, slapping each other on the butts and showering together.
I think the question should be, is pro sports ready for its athletes to come out of the closet? |

I think it's unfair to characterize this behavior as gay. The idea that men expressing comraderie with one another through physical gestures is gay is the result of extreme anti-homosexual thinking. |

Also included would be health clubs/gyms, Military Service (especially during a war). |

There was an openly gay footballer back in the day called Justin Fashanu, who actually ended up commiting suicide (not sure if it was related). However Im not too sure of another example. Honrable mention goes to Sol Campbell who denied being gay, despite never being publicly accused of it!
There has been a Rugby referee in the media quite a bit lately for being openly gay. He said he gets a bit of stick about it but generally no one is that bothered. I think it would still take a brave guy to come out in the Premiership, purely just because of the crap he would get for it. |

Nigel Owens is the rugby ref, He is one of the best refs in the game too. Nobody gives him stick over it, suppose rugby fans and players are just better behaved than in other sports.
Donal Og Cusack came out recently, he plays hurling for Cork, and although it's not a pro sport (in the sense that players receive money for playing) they do attract 80,000 people to watch their championship matches and would attract more if the stadium could hold it.
Ashley Cole is another who is thought to be gay, especially since he (alledgedly) put his phone in his and sucked another guys while videoing both! |

He didn't need to be. The amount of chants about his sexuality from the stands saw to that. |
