Back at home they cost about $8 a pack. Forget that. I'm not paying 8$ a day for an addiction. But here, being so cheap, after a few nights drinking i'm back off the wagon..

Do they sell Nicotine gum here in korea? If so, anyone know the name of it?
If I am addicted to nicotine I'd rather chew the gum

$8 a day is an expensive habit? Gum is probably expensive too. Ask a pharmacist. Anyways, the gum won't give you that quick rush of nicotine that smoking will, so smoke up Johnny!

Then again, there are other costs to smoking, like deteriorating health. You can always make more money, once your health is gone, it ain't coming back.

Get sick. Best hope for quitting. Nothing like 5 days coughing and nausea making it impossible to smoke. After that you're through the first hurdle.

yep, this is how I did it...

well actually, I think it was the fact I smoked like almost 2 packs one saturday night and drank like 6 bottles of soju.. when I woke up at like 8am with a pounding head, a sore throat and serious dry horrors, I reached over to my side table to grab some water and all that was staring me in the face was a pack of cigarettes.. I squashed those up and through them across the room for making me feel like ASSSS.. didnt touch a cigarette until the following weekend...hahahaha
then, I just faded them out slowly, finally I was down to like smoking only when I was smashed. and that was not very offen.. then I become just a social smoker- (smashed smoker) now I hate them the smell of them sends me off... still even with this hatred for them, I still once and while when im SERIOUSLY smashed, I'll light one up.. and then in the morning feel worse for it, and tell myself I'm an idiot.. aint gonna be hooked again though.. keep telling yourself its bad...! you HATE, smokers are losers! etc...

They sell nicotine gum at any pharmacy in Korea. It's actually the "nicorette" brand from back home. It's much cheaper too. 10,000 won for 30 pieces of gum. I think in America it's about 30 bucks.
I haven't had much luck with it though.

I agree, quitting when its 2,500 won a pack is impossible. As a friend of mine said "You came to the wrong bloody place if you want to quit smoking. Try Utah."

2500? You must be smoking Marlboros.

The patches cost about 12,000 per 7. And the gum is around 10,000. Quiting is definitely a lot cheaper. In the states. The patches cost over 30.

But, I know what you mean, every time I think I quit. I stop by the store and end up puffing the butts the again. Korea is definitely not a place to quit. lol

Yep, I got sick too and that's what helped me.

I had a bad cold and cough in March, 2008, so I stopped smoking for a few days. When I got better, I started smoking again---of course!---but only a couple after work. Then I got really sick again in April with bronchitis, and between the cold, the cough, and the fever, I couldn't do much of anything for about a week. It wasn't so much that my body couldn't handle cigarettes, but that I didn't have any in the house, and didn't want to walk all the way to Mini Stop to by more. If I had had 'em, I'd have smoked 'em.

But even today, some 19 months later, I still crave cigarettes pretty frequently. But I've learned that it's just not worth it anymore.

I used that price difference to help motivate me to quit on a 2-1/2 month stint between contracts in America. Bought a carton of smokes in the Incheon Duty Free, and swore I would not pay US prices.

I haven't smoked since, and that was almost 7 years ago.

Yeah, I hear ya man. I smoke like a chimney, and it's damned hard to quit. I am getting the urge to go healthy again, so I think I'll join you in your efforts.

If you go to any pharmacy in Korea, they will understand the English for "nicotine gum" and "nicotine patch". If they give you a weird look, say it again with slower enunciation. They know what it is. If they don't sell it, another pharmacy will.

I wanna try hypnotism. I heard that works fast. Yeah, easy way out, whatever. I just wanna quit, man. Anybody know any stop-smoking hypnotists in Seoul?

Meh, I tried the pills. They made me wanna smoke even more. At least the gum or the patch give you a bit of a fix. I find the gum gives me a stomachache if I swallow too much nicotine-spit though. The patch sustains you at a perfect nicotine level all day long, and all you have to do is find some way to distract yourself when you get the psychological cravings. That's the hard part. 90% of the quitting-smoking challenge is all in your head.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with the pills. The patches gave me lots of dreams and they peeled off frequently.

You are right, 90% is in your head.

I used these...

Buproprion is an antidepressant that has been shown to limit cravings. It is marketed as both Wellbutrin and Zyban.
