My boyfriend and I are teaching at a hagwon in Daegu. We came knowing we would receive 10 vacation days, however we were under the impression that we would be able to choose when to take those. Unfortunately, our hagwon chooses our vacation days, which we have chosen to accept rather than fight.
We started teaching only this week, and they are making us take our first week of vacation in December. We would like to travel, however we're worried about any travel restrictions they might enforce. The previous teachers were not allowed to travel to Japan in November, due to the flu, and I know that they will not be happy with us traveling in December.
So I have three questions.
1. If they start asking us what we're doing during our vacation and we lie to them, can we get into trouble simply for lying?
2. Is there anyway they can find out that we traveled? Meaning, will they ask for our passports at the end of our contract and see that we traveled?
3. If they tell us we cannot travel, even if we don't bring it up, can they legally stop us?
4. Is it worth the risk of damaging our relationship with the school so early in our contracts?
I'm willing to come back three days early to get a chest x-ray to prove that I'm healthy. I'm pretty serious about pushing for this, and would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. |

At a hagwon, they have invested so much money in the two of you if they went through a recruiter as well as paid for your flight tickets so they definitely wouldn't fire you over it, and if you are a hard worker at teaching and nice to everyone at work then that's all that will matter to a hagwon director. When push comes to shove you two have the leverage. Don't make your director lose any face: prevent them from even saying you cannot go by avoiding the topic of leaving the country altogether (and if by some chance they do find out then quickly assert that the two of you are going for sure, make it very clear that your tickets are nonrefundable and that you definitely are going. It is not an issue of permission: it is a free country and you can go wherever and do whatever you want independent of your employer. AFTERWARDS, like two weeks after you get back, it won't really matter to your director because then the risk of you both missing work because of the H1N1 virus will have passed. So ideally it will not be brought up until at least then.

Hi,
Take hagwon vacation whenever you can you can be sure the students will be around most of the time. What you say is up to you.
Don't forget the mutliple/single entry visa though if you have that you are permitted. |

I agree. Do as you wish, go where you wish.
Korea is much more dangerous than Japan for swine flu. It's safer to go to Japan, in fact. |

| It's against Human Rights policy to not allow you to go wherever you want on vacation. Never heard of such crap from Hagwons!!!! |

| We just want to say thanks, we've appreciated the responses. We decided to go to China. We will follow everyone's advice and just tell them we're going to Jeju island or Seoul, and only let them know we went to China when it's too late for them to do anything. Thanks again. |
