|
|
On Monday morning I get on the GEPIK bus and go to orientation. There is a schedule for doing lesson plans, Korean culture, etc etc.
Has anyone gone to this and could give me information on what to expect? Am I going to learn anything worthwhile?
I'm thinking that it could be good to meet people, but im skeptical that they're going to tell me anything I couldn't gather from an information packet. Anyway, I'm not complaining since I get to miss class for 3 days.
Anyone else going this Monday? |

No, I've been there before.
Sounds like you are not happy: classes are crap, school is in the middle of nowhere and your co-teachers are not helping.
If you mean 'worthwhile' as 'directly addressing' your problems: no. They don't have time to answer everyone's problems.
What they'll do is give suggestions to solve typical problems of NETs and you'll have to work out your solution from that.
I found the O fairly useful anyway. |

Lukas - It depends on your personality and the depths of your drinking habits.
You won't learn anything in their lectures. It will remind you of a really really bad undergraduate class. But the social aspect of the trip is great. Orientation is where a lot of people meet really good friends. My best friends are people I met at the Orientation 9 months ago.
This is your schedule:
1. Get off the bus.
2. Find your room.
3. Watch hot pop singers lip sync on stage.
4. Drink beer with random people.
5. Wake up, hear a lecture about lesson plans and why Koreans hate sick days.
6. Drink more beer.
7. Wake up really hung over from 2 days of drinking, hear a lesson on effective co-teaching.
8. Drink more.
9. Wake up late for class and eat sandwiches in the lounge while those other idiots are forced to sit through more boring lectures.
That isn't too much of an exaggeration. It's loads of fun and a nice break from the workplace. Have a good time! |

I'm going but to the secondary one and I was wondering all the same things as you. I'm hoping it will be a bit more worthwhile then some people say but I'm not holding out much hope. I am hoping that there will be nice people to meet. Oh well, like you said, it is chance to miss 3 days of work so that is always a bonus. |

I 'm going to the same one as you sagekate, i'm pretty nervous for some reason. I'm also hoping for something...anything worthwhile as I need some new teaching ideas and fast! |

I wouldn't say I am unhappy. The only complaint I have is the public school desk warming when all my classes are done. But whatever, it gives me a good chunk of time to practice my Korean. My location is fine too, Bucheon, so I'm an hour out of Seoul & there is plenty to do around here. I just wish I knew more people around here with the same schedule as me. Most of the people I know are working at Hogwans, so they don't get out of work until 9ish, meh. |

That;s actually the schedule for the elementary orientation. The secondary one is mostly the same, just with a lot more drinking |

Best thing, I'd say, is that you meet others in your same boat.
As for the official stuff, maybe 1/10th is worth paying attention. |

Don't forget the part where some GEPIK teachers got so drunk that they actually trashed a room! |
