We are considering a trip to China for Christmas or New Years. Are most establishments open or closed for these holidays? Will the airports be very crowded?
Please forgive my cultural ignorance; I have not experienced Christmas/New Years in Asia before. |

Shops not closed, airport not crowded.
Christmas is seen as a commercial holiday in China, with her not being a Christian country - heck, even a Christian country like the UK looks at Christmas like it's the biggest retail season in the calendar year.
I was in Beijing last year and everything was open. No problem. |

Christmas is not a big deal in China...because it's China. I went to Beijing over Christmas break a few years ago and nothing was closed. |
