| Haha, I remember hearing about Korea being the most Internet connected country in the world and the people fairly tech savvy. Got here and saw they're using IE. I mean c'mon. |

I know. It's so sad. My Korean GF has switched to Chrome and finds it so much better too. she only uses IE for banking/shopping.
Gah, why can't they get rid of their stupid active x certificates too! |

I think its because 99% of koreans use passwords that a 5 year old could guess. |

The amazing thing to me is that many Koreans barely even know how to use IE. I set my homepage to blank and someone at my work opened a new browser window and waited about a minute before I realized he was waiting for Naver or Daum to pop up. I told him he has to enter the address and he assumed the browser was broken.
IE requirements (banks installing about 30 pieces of software just so I can log in), ARC number requirements (for every damn site that needs a login), plus the past iPhone problems (not being able to use an unlocked phone here) are almost enough to drive me back to Canada. Fortunately I can put them into perspective. |

| lol microsoft did issue a patch, it was called IE7 and then IE8. smh @ koreans expecting a 8 year old browser to be still supported. |

Korea has got a hell of a lot of media mileage out of their extensive internet penetration and cellphone coverage.
I know a lot of people in other countries must think Korea is some kind of tech heaven.............the truth is that Korean are really slow adopters of new tech. They only jump on new tech when it has reached tipping point in other countries.
This is the land of widely used mediocre tech. |

I couldn't have said it better myself. Though they do keep upgrading home internet service at a decent rate. Some places should have 1GBps fiber pretty soon, and at reasonable rates like 40,000 won per month. But it's too bad that even with a fast internet connection you still have to deal with IE6, ActiveX, and other junk.
Hopefully once they move to IE8 and proper SSL they will keep it that way so that other browsers will display stuff properly and be able to use banking software. At least pages designed for IE8 work with other browsers properly. |

The internet here is great for accessing everything except those Korean websites which complicate actions by unnecessary security software and password protection.
I never knew that internet banking could become so tedious.
The UK isn't exactly known as a Technological Powerhouse but when my girlfriend was here to study she was suprised how easy internet backing was. All she needed was an ID and Password, 5 seconds later and she was logged in. Here, we have to deal with Digital Certificates and Active X crap.
My girlfriend thought the UK was expensive but I can get a free high-end phone by signing a 12/24 month contract; no need to actually pay for the phone, unlike in Korea. For a contact to use the original Haptic it cost her over 600,000 just for the phone. In the UK, the phone was free.
Like a previous poster on this thread, I have got my girlfriend using Chrome compared to IE; and she is already a convert.
Koreans have really had the wool pulled over their eyes if they think their technological development is right at the top. Then again, they don't seem to mind being financially raped by their Chaebols who set a high domestic price on their "premium" products.
I really hope with the release of the iPhone that Koreans start demanding better quality, price and service from their Chaebol providers. |
