The person who does the payroll had an operation, and the owners are telling us that they don't know how much to pay us, yet I have been paid 3 months, and someone else has been paid 10 months. They know our salaries. The newbies said that it was ok to get paid 1mil. won, and when the clerk returns,
to pay the rest. Naturally, the director did not tell me until after the newbies said it was ok & I might have been told that I was being difficult. So of course, we weren't paid yesterday & I don't know whether we will get our partial payment today.

Should we worry? The school is trying to recapture the students that they lost. It's a franchise of one of the biggest schools in Korea. Opinions please.

You should have left long ago.

You probably will not get paid (at least not in full) and you probably will have to fight for what you do get.

Tell them to pay up or you're leaving. And then follow through when the inevitable happens.

Without records, you won't have much of a case with the labor office I think.

Wink

Sorry, I mis-read your post. I wouldn't worry too much yet. If pay starts getting 2 or 3 weeks late, then it's time to take action.

99.9% certain that this is B.S. Why wouldn't they know your salary? You have a contract and they have (or should have pay records). The only way that this is plausible is if they are "cooking the books" in regards to what students pay and what they pay their teachers. Even then they should have a set of books somewhere that list the real deal.

And regardless of what the newbies said, you should have objected. Just be sure to do it the Korean way. Here's how.

Director: "Can we pay you 1 million won on payday and the rest later?"

You: Stare at the desk thoughtfully, chewing your lower lip.
Mutter "Aigo" and "Chinchu?" under your breath.
Adopt a mournful expression and look up.
Say sadly "I think it is not possible."
Smile

If an employer didn't pay me on time, I would stop working immediately.

Thank UrbanMyth, thats exactly as I thought. They definitely don't pay as the contract states. Mid month they pay 600,000w and then on the end of the month they pay the rest (minus taxes). The teachers before me were all happy with that. They were in their twenties, so the owners took advantage. Another time they paid us on a Mon. instead of a Fri. because the owners were in Seoul. Whenever they pay late, the pay is made at 12:30, but on payday they don't pay until 4pm.

I thought that it was interesting that they told the newbies, and did not tell the older teachers. I don't think that it is difficult to know how much they owe us, especially since 3 get 1.3 and I get 1.4. Lots of bs going on here, and the owners are very wealthy.

1.3 and 1.4? typo?

Is this in million won per month?

Do you work full time?

Maybe you mean twice per month?

It is quite possible that with overtime and withholding for utilities and other expenses that your school will not know exactly how much to pay you. They should be able to estimate an amount that is close and hold back enough to cover expenses and wait on overtime and pay the balance.

Of course, if you really only make 1.3 or 1.4 million, then getting 1 million is actually a low but reasonable approximation if you are really waiting for the clerk to return from the hospital.

I make 2.2 mil. won per month, as I indicated I get 600,000w in the middle of the month, and then 1.4 at the end of the month. (200,000w is taxes & pension) I really think that with my 7 years of teaching in pub. school & TEFL I should have been given 2.3 or 2.4, but this is K land...
I teach 30 forty min. classes.
