|

Hi. I could use some helpful advice on how to properly use recruiters to get a job as soon as possible. Ie. Should I carpet bomb recruiters and hope one hits, or pick one and pester it until they find a job that is suitable for me?
To set out my stall, I am male, 22, Bsc (2:1), no experience, am asking to work in Seoul or Busan (tho i have also mentioned that i will consider other locations) and to top it all off im from the UK. I understand that this puts me at the bottom of the pile pretty much.
However, I do have all my documents together, ready to leave immediately and am willing to teach any age group.
I am doing a lot of research on teaching techniques, games for students ect and teaching will be my priority when I am out there. I really want to be a good teacher, as bad as I appear on paper.
So, I am asking for advice on how I might go about getting a job as soon as possible, which recruiters I should contact, and how many. (i have already contacted 6. 1 of which says she is talking to directors for me, 1 who said im on record but its quiet at the moment and 4 others that have not replied yet and im just about to chase up...)
Thank you very much. |

I think you've answered your own question, chief. You've all ready begun "carpet bombing" (great verbiage, by the way) and you've all ready seen the results: 1 of promise, 1 which has nothing (that's what on record means...), and four others that are preoccupied with something else.
So harass the first, forget about the second, and bug the latter. You might consider contacting even more. The more you sew, the more you will reap -- and from the harvest you will have the luxury of scrutiny.
Simply put, no amount of harassment will squeeze a job from a single recruiter's contact book.
Keep doing what you're doing. How much time you invest in each recruiter will depend on the amount of time you have available. Follow your gut instincts, do your research, and ask lots of questions. You'll do all right. |

Im not op, but am wondering somethings along the lines of the OP, and don't want to start a new thread. Anyone have any sites recommendations for jobs other then this site? Are there any general things to look for when searching for a job, i.e. money, work, etc. I have been lurking for a week or two, but am still a little lost. any helpful links as well. thanks for any help! |

general consensus is hit up as many recruiters as you can. If youre applying for a gepik or smoe post, then stick with only one application. |

Contact as many recruiters as you can and make sure you give them your exact specifications. When they send you jobs you don't want. Politely decline. Keep reminding them of what you are looking for and that you won't consider other positions. Most recruiters get it after a few declined positions and will start to offer you jobs that meet, or almost meet, your requirements. If they offer you jobs that aren't what you are asking for more than 3 or 4 times, I would say stop contacting them.
Last year, I had a recruiter who would send me jobs every day that didn't meet my requirements. After declining 6 jobs, 6 days in a row, he started sending me jobs that were a lot closer to what I wanted. This type of thing happened several times with several recruiters. Eventually, most recruiters will catch on. |

Dumb question, and sorry for high-jacking your thread, but what should one look for if they are new to teaching and are looking at contracts or jobs? By this I mean I have no experience at all, so what is reasonable to look for/ ask for? I'm going to get my passport renewed tomorrow, get a criminal background check, and fix up my resume. I have been spending a couple of hours here reading in both, the general forum, and the job related forum, and getting ideas, but just wanted to ask some questions. Also, apologies if this is easy to find, as I haven't come across it yet (or at least that I caught on to.) |

Basically Chris, you have come a year too late. Last year you would have got Seoul or Busan no problem but this year, a Bsc doesn't mean a great deal in the world of TEFL. I have got a Linguistics/TEFL degree and three years experience but as a non NA male, I also got absolutely nothing in regards work offers and now I am in China.
If money isn't the main factor I strongly suggest coming to China because being male and British - it doesn't put you at the bottom of the E-2 totem pole as that position belongs to the black South African (There is a section of Korean society that is completely racist) but we are not far from the bottom either. No-one is clamouring for our services mate.
I am sure you'll get something if you wait it out and keep applying everyday - but once you get there you'll wonder why you bothered. |
