wow...i am loving how many dylan fans there are here.

great posts, great links.

and, of course, he can sing. he sings the songs just as they're meant to be. and his voice hits my soul way more than...um..mariah carey, say.

he's a true poet. he writes the things we all feel, and does it so well.

(and i totally wish i hadn't misspelled favourite in the title of this thread. sigh.)

I think a lot of his lyrics are nonsense, intentionally. But like other poets he makes them vague and slippery. One can hear some songs countless times and still have no idea what is being said. That is why after 20 plus years I still have no idea what he is about. That is an artist, in my opinion.

This is an indictment of my age, but here goes: There was an ad campaign for blank tapes (remember when people made tapes) where they had a guy hold up signs with what he thought the singer was saying in some famous songs which were difficult to understand; the logic being that if you bought this blank tape, you'd be better able to understand the song because the quality of XX tape was so high. Anyway, they used Dylan's "Subterrainian Homesick Blues" (and Desmond Dekker's The Israelites)

Bob Dylan is an AMERICAN folk singer. The title thread is still misspelled.
