| Quote: |
| Swiss voters have approved a right-wing-backed proposal to ban construction of new minarets, initial projections showed on Sunday, a surprise result that could damage Switzerland's economic ties with Muslim states. |

| Islam is the number one religion in the world. These kinds of laws, like the anti-muslim clothing laws in France, are just signposts of the anxiety Christians feel. It is disconcerting to no longer be the top of the heap. |

| I can't fathom why anyone finds that show funny or insightful. |

| It's funny because it's true. Truly absurdist humor would never find a mass audience in a conservative society. |

This is roughly the level of insight I would expect from a Stewart fan.

A surprisingly insightful statement, though I don't see the relevance. |

But yet he's 'the most trusted man in the media' according to some poll or other.
A month or so ago there was a report that right wingers who watch Steven Colbert thought he agrees with them. |

I'm not a fan, I only followed the link above. Sounds like you have your mind already made up. But as a conservative, you would NEVER do any thing to show your support one way or another. You'll just sit there and post on dave's. so thank you, I guess. |

| Wow, the people posting in the comments section certainly don't fit the stereotype of bleeding-heart, multiculture-loving Guardian readers. I'm not a regular reader of their comments section, but this is the second time I've noticed that discrepancy between what the newspaper preaches and what its readers(or at least the ones who comment) believe. |

The Guardian attracts a lot of posters who absolutely detest the Guardian and its left of centre politics. It appears they can't resist a regular read of their most hated paper (which they call The Guardianista), and feel compelled express their great irritation, and to counter the online comments pages with their rightwing views. I imagine Big Verne and Sergio Stefano to be among them, given their apparant fascination with the old Manchester Guardian. |

Yeah, you get the same thing on The CBC, the general slant of which is comparatively liberal, but whose message boards, especially on immigration etc, always sound like the conversation at a rural Alberta donut shop.
Mind you, on the Guardian boards anyway, I didn't notice a lot of people framing their arguments as anti-Guardian per se. It wasn't quite clear to me whether most of them were generally against the paper's overall viewpoint, or just on Muslim-related issues. |

Eric Margolis chastises the Swiss, and sees a cultural divide in how the vote went down.
| Quote: |
Today, 25% of Switzerland's population is foreign-born. This makes Swiss -- particularly the German-speaking majority -- very nervous and xenophobic. The much more worldly, sophisticated French Swiss are far more open-minded. There is a Swiss secret police that watches all resident foreigners; locals are encouraged to spy on non-Swiss neighbours.

Many of the slow-minded Swiss German yokels who voted for the ban may have to go back to cheese-making and cow-herding.

No, intolerance is not a two-way street. It doesn't matter at all how intolerant of other faiths Muslim countries are when it comes to the Swiss following the Swiss constitution.
By the way, which Muslim countries do you think are officially and/or unofficially intolerant of Christians or Hindus? I just want to get a count to determine if they constitute a majority of Muslim countries. Here is a list for you of countries with a majority Muslim population. |
